FLAME SUIT ON

firstly the strava part is only to track my distances and spread of my rides, no I don't have a GPS I sold it, and I am def. Not going for any KOMS ;)

What I do know is every time I go overseas my cell phone account is already stoopid money so I can imagine a couple of hours riding will HURT??? That's the question does anyone know the COSTINGS FOR A FACT on STRAAAAVA when you on data and cell/network roaming???

Last thing I want when I come back is an even bigger cell account

You don't need data to strava only to upload once done. Use the wifi in the hotel

I'm not arguing I'm sure of ALL PEOPLE you would know ;)

Surely it uses the data for the mapping and location ???while you riding??

Okay but if those options don't work, wouldn't it be more viable to just buy a small gps like a bryton 20 or something for your overseas trips? Knowing what roaming costs you'd probably pay that off in two trips at the most. Just an idea.

According to what I just read in GOOGLE no it doesn't it uses the phones gps you can switch data roaming off on your phone and it will record your ride and you can upload later.

Seemingly airplane mode is not good as it also turns off the gps .....

Did all my running and cycling recording using strava while I was in overseas. No mobile-data were require for recording. Finding a wifi-hotspot to sync the result will be tricky (& costly if one do this via the hotel)

HOWEVER, I would advise to get the latest version of strava on your mobile-device (just get it up-to-date), older version will need mobile-data to initiate the activity recording.

I tried using the Strava app when I was in China (to record where I was travelling) - it didn't work, but it may have been an older version (like some say above.

The Endomondo app worked like a charm in GPS mode only.

I used BLOCKING MODE so that I could receive calls from the wife and boss only. I switched off the WI-FI and MOBILE DATA and only updated when I got back to the hotel - and never paid a cent. Once I got to the hotel, I could upload and export the GPX file into other apps.
