ZTR Crest cracks

Hi Hubbers.

Last week one nipple on my rear ZTR crest broke and I had it replaced. Yesterday after a 80km ride I noticed that there are cracks around six other nipples on the rim. They were not there before I took a ride, because i inspected the rim after it came back from the bikeshop. My question is this: Did I do the damage when I rode the bike with the broken nipple or did the bikeshop over tighten the nipples when they trued it?

Any one else had ZTR's crack around the nipples?

Thanks

I suspect that the spokes were over-tightened.

It is unlikely.  The rim will fold before it cracks.  That type of damage is fatigue from the wheel flexing, normal wear and tare.  This happens to a lot of the lighter rims - especially on a 29" with 28 spokes!

what is your weight the weight limit on the rims is 87kg?

..amazing how an "anyone else had" question quickly becomes a "you should get" thread.

Back to the OP's question; never had cracked ZTR rims before, but then again I never keep wheels for longer than a year. What David Marshall say make sense

My weight is 77 and on a bad day 79. I cant complain about the crest, they took a lot of punishment and did about 8000km. The only worry I had was that the cracks only appeared after the new nipple was fitted. I continued riding for about 40km to my home after the nipple had broke. I looked at the other nipples after  the ride and there was no cracks in the rim. The wheels also pinged a lot when I got on the bike after the new nipple was fitted.

I do not blame the bike shop and I will fit a new crest, but I just want to make sure it do not happen again.

Would normal wear n tear flex fatigue be accelerated by over tightened spokes? Granted the rims were probably nearly tickets even without over tightened spokes but if they had been overtightened may that have precipitated the cracks finally coming apparent ?

That should not happen if properly built and tensioned - the builder has missed a step out.... possibly more than 1....

Find a better wheel builder....

+1 I was going to say probably not the bike shop until you mentioned the "ping" sound. The thing is, that type of sound is usually caused by too little tension - unless they totally got it WRONG....

Apparenty it clicks/pings a little as the tension settles? Just what the guy who built up my crests onto new hubs told me. Told me it's normal. Perhaps I have been mislead...
