  • 2 weeks later...

I had been meaning to cancel DSTV for months and never got around to it, finally one Monday morning I received a survey request from them, I never do these things but this time for some reason I answered the survey and that had reminded me to cancel the subscription, I immediately called the call centre and set up the cancellation.

The price increase was then announced that afternoon which further justified my decision, end of the month came and the service disconnected.

Last week I get a mail form DSTV that because I had answered the survey all that time ago I have won an Apple Ipad 4 Mini 64gb (got delivered today).

My question is this.... should I feel guilty and return the prize because I am no longer a subscriber? :whistling:  :whistling:

MultiChoice and SAFACT nail pirate TV box seller in South Africa

Jacque Hilbert from AVSupply has pleaded guilty to charges relating to the distribution of IPTV boxes that facilitate piracy.

The first successful criminal case against a distributor of Internet TV boxes that facilitate piracy has concluded, the Southern African Federation Against Copyright Theft (SAFACT) has announced.

Jacque Hilbert from AVSupply pleaded guilty to charges relating to selling the media boxes when he appeared in the Bellville Specialised Commercial Court on 31 March.

MultiChoice and SAFACT took Hilbert and his wife to court after a MultiChoice employee spotted a DroidTV Box MXIII for sale on their website for R1,500, AVSupply.co.za

The TV box ships with software that allows users to illegally download copyrighted content.

The MultiChoice employee reportedly bought a TV box from Tracy Hilbert, after which charges were brought against the couple.

Jacque Hilbert pleaded guilty on Section 86(4) of the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act, said SAFACT.

The Act criminalizes the use of a device or computer program to overcome security measures designed to protect data, or prevent access to data.

SAFACT said Hilbert was convicted and sentenced to a fine of R20,000. The sentence was suspended for five years on condition that he is not convicted of contravening the provisions of section 86 of the ECT Act again.

“All the devices that were seized were forfeited to the state and will be destroyed. The value of the confiscated items is estimated at approximately R80,000,” said SAFACT.

SAFACT Managing Director Jacques Allers said the fight against piracy in South Africa will go on, and “several more cases are being investigated and several more are in the pipeline”.

“We can only hope that this conviction will serve its purpose to deter others from this or similar crimes relating to the creative and entertainment industries,” said Allers.

Glad I canned them. In the 2 weeks since I've better quality and only when I want to. And I'm definitely not falling for their Showmax ripoff.

I am assuming that they are covering downloading and streaming with the same set of handcuffs here...?

FilmonTV is free and apparently all legal. All you need is a valid TV license (Well in the UK at least)

the argument there was KODI with extensions installed - so i.e. KODI with sportsdevil installed. ...wankers

If the box was sold with kodi installed but no addons then they would have not been prosecuted as I see it as Kodi is a multi media streamer originally developed for streaming your stored media. i.e, music, pictures and video.

They must have been advertising and selling it with pre-installed addons.

And as said you can buy these boxes anywhere and everywhere on main stream sale sites like Amazon.

Typical DSTV... and they think they will stop it with winning this case? lol
