Dead hands

After riding about 50km on my mountain bike my hands start to go numb, to the extent that gripping, changing gears and pulling the brakes become quite difficult.

Is this due to the bike not being properly set up, the grips not having sufficient padding or just me?

Any help and advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Antonie

Okay I haven't read all of this thread, but the most common case for this is bad bike setup. Maybe pop past Cycle Fit or a similar such place.

I had this same problem, I then explained this to my local LBS where I bought my bike from, they changed the steering angle to a more natural position to suit me, I also changed my gloves to a decent pair of gel ones and that seems to have helped. have not had this problem again!

Do some Pilates.

Strengthen your core and you'll put less weight on your hands as you support your weight more effectively.

Make sure it's not carpal tunnel syndrome... my problem. Had my right hand repaired 20 years ago, never got aroound to the left one, and now it irritates the .... out of me on the bike.

You have 2 major nerves running through your wrist, one "controls" the thumb, first 2 fingers and inner half of ring finger, and the other the outer half of ring- and the little finger.

And that's how it's diagnosed - there must've been threads about it.

Interesting, maybe I should check my left hand out. But its mainly my small finger which essentially affects the left side of my hand. I have tried different grips in the shops and the the ergo one seems to fit best. It allows my finger to get a nice grip around the grip.

Its a common problem with most cyclists, myself included.

1 - check the drop of your h/bars are not lower than your saddle height

2 - if you don't already have riser bars fitted, get some riser bars, I recommend Ryder Rizer bars, they are light enough, have a good height angle and well priced.

3 - you can also change from a 6deg stem to a 35deg stem if necessary, which will raise your anatomical seating position and put less weight on your hands - again - Ryder stems are very well priced

4 - you can get a pair of Ergo grips which will spread your hands - yup - you guessed it Ryder does them too and wont break your bank

5 - a set of bar ends will help so you can change the position of your hands.

I got a set of original Ergo's and it didn't help at all, they actually made the numbing worse (not to say they wont help you). Moved back to original round grips, the numbing improved but is now back since I bought a new bike. Gonna try ESI grips as soon as I can find them.

I have managed to decrease my numb hands problem significantly by lowering my saddle to the correct height - it was way too high. Used the std 109% and 88% of inseam methods, which both put saddle in exactly the same spot. Remarkable improvement, and feeling way more in control on downhills
