Sky are to ride softails for the cobbles this Sunday at De Ronde and PR as well.

According to Wiggo, these

new Pinarello Dogma K8-S frames are "game changing" with their 10mm rear suspension. Specially designed rear chain stays flex to allow the rear shock to activate.

Surely the front is where you want most of the vibrations taken away.

Sure that would be a help too, but I think might add too much weight.

For rear suspension the benefit is that your rear wheel keeps better contact with the surface. A rigid rear end skips and bounces, so all that air time means less ability to transfer pedal force directly to forward movement. Comfort is a slight benefit, but I'm guessing the main reason Sky did this was to go faster over the cobbles with less effort.

True story. Geraint Thomas needs a roll bar :P

"The inability to continue his winning streak at Scheldeprijs is a disappointment for both Kittel and the team after a hat trick of wins at the Belgium one-day race in the last three years. Getting back to his normal performance level is the first priority. For now, Kittel will work closely with the team’s medical and performance staff to ensure a gradual build in the intensity of his training."

Front end vibration is reduced on these "Roubaix" (God I hope Specialized don't sue me for using that name as a generic bike class) frames by extending the rake and trail resulting in a longer wheelbase. In the same way a car with a longer wheelbase is more stable on the road than a shorter car.

So there is no need to add front suspension, the frame absorbs and dissipates the vibration.

The rear shock keeps the rear wheel on the ground, resulting in more power on the road.
