I just got off the phone with Bennet from Ace of Spades to get a heads up on the Jonkershoek fire. It started on the right hand side of the valley yesterday and has since then moved across to the left side of the valley. Fire fighters have contained the fire to such an extent that it's not threatening the fire hut . The trails on that side are safe (for now). The fire is burning in the back of the valley, high up the mountain, but Bennet reckons that the Neverending Story trail might have been affected. He is in Jonkershoek now, going to get an update on the situation on the ground. No houses or lives at risk, so it's ok to worry about the trails. Bennet said that the fire looks like it's also burning above Lourensford now.
I will keep you posted.

Trails not threatened yet so let's just wait before we all start buying hardtails ok?

Even if the trails aren't damaged at all. The fires proximity poses a serious safety issue for use in the immediate future.

There was a fire in the Grabouw MTO (same company as Jonkers/Tokai) area at the same time as the Cape Peninsula fires. Fortunately it was contained very well.

If it is beyond Neverending Story I don't see how (assuming they contain it to that area) any trail other than NES will be affected from a precautionary point of view. Let's just wait and see before we start calling the end of mountainbiking in the Cape.

I know the Hub can't function without bad news and disaster, but let's try to sit this one out and wait.

LOL. Already got 2 hardtail frames. One to build into an XC type bike and the other as a play bike.

But yeah - I'm hoping for hte best, preparing myself for the worst. Nixon is going to see a LOT more of me over the next few months.

Eishhhhhh, any info on the cause of the fire yet? As mentioned this is more than a little worrying! Did News24 commentors club have a picnic in the area or something?

Not sure, think its only burning the smaller plantation and moved into fynbos. Should be fine for trails in older plantations.

Sigh, when I'm this despondent even a bad sense of humour doesnt make me feel any better

Do u take it for a Service or a bike wash after that ride?

Can't ride on the road because I'll get squashed.

Can't ride on the trails because they're all burning.

Time to sell my bikes and take up extreme knitting.

Or go play golf? Both should be cheaper at least?
