XT clutch - why?

So, I collected my new Anthem X 29'er on Saturday. Lucky me!!

The rear derailleur is a  Shimano XT, Shadow+ which has a clutch.

What is the purpose of this wondrous clutch? When would I use it?

The clutch, when engaged adds tension to the chain, thus reducing chain slap and possibility of dropping a chain while negotiating the bumpier sections.

The clutch should only be disengaged when removing the rear wheel.

Just thinking would it not by the same token make gear changes 'harder' .... of course to what extent could be argued?

It doesn't add tension but rather applies a friction clutch to the normal tensioner spring preventing it from bouncing around on the train. resulting in less dropped chains and reduced noise. I should remain on at all times and only turned off if you want to remove the back wheel. Well worth the upgrade.

I run XTR Shadow + , shifting is definitely "harder" when clutch is on , I did a test on the bike mechanics stand , The shift lever is softer when the clutch is off , Its not a big issue but definitely a difference on My bike .

Think of it as compression and rebound damping for your derailleur spring. Reduces the likelihood of chain jumping off the gears on rough ground the same way that the damping on your fork keeps your wheel on the ground instead of bouncing around.

Have your shifter checked.

It does not increase the tension on your chain. It increases the resistance on the pivot of the cage that holds the sprockets preventing chain slap. You want it ON on rough roads.

So with the clutch on shifting is harder, but very slightly. You can adjust the tension of the clutch, so make sure it is not too tight.

Overall one of the best improvements to the derailleur ever.
