Power meters - what do i need to know

As long as the electronics remains corrosion free. Strain gauges are sensitive devices so anything that can affect the voltage in the strain gauge or the resistance across it will affect the accuracy. As long as the unit remains sealed it should last forever. If the strain gauge is open to atmosphere then lifespan won't be more than 5 years of useful readings

I ask cause my thinking is that if it lasts for a looong time then the cost in investing in one is not hight at all. People replace their bikes more often i guess.

I havn't given up on the power meter thing yet. Still waiting on my LBS.

Was in there yesterday and received excuses regarding they don't know what BB... the supplier does have stock, merging of power meter companies and that model numbers are uncertain for this year... I am not really pushing or too concerned right now as i don't have the cash to buy it right now any case - only in a months time.

So after waiting there for price estimate, they phoned the supplier and i was given a ball park figure of R 9500 - R 11500 depending on the crank i have.

I had to send photos in of my crank cause they needed some numbers on it to determine the model that will work on my crank. Now they are waiting on Stages to quote them.

Pics of the crank below.

I'm finally getting my Ibike Newton set up this week so will be delving into the murky world of training with power.

Any essential books / doc I can read to get a good heads up and work out how to use it and set up effective sessions?

Hay Chaps,

We totally recommend using a PM with our program's at www.todaysplan.co.za however HR can be just as effective is zones are set correctly. Here is our explaination on power https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXF0c3v9Tl8

TodayPlan has some really cool features with Stages like prompting you when your battery is running low along with firmware upgrade prompts.

However all PM's will give you a good training platform, as the numbers it is producing will be the numbers you need to hit, given you only train with one type of PM otherwise number will vary slightly between all manufacturers.

The most stable I have found is Quarq and still affordable to change battery unlike SRM.

Check out TodaysPlan page on training with a PM:

Thanks and happy spinning

How is the Ibike Newton working?

Im looking at getting a Power meter too, but I reckon being patient will be more beneficial with the 4iiii Precision power meter(similar to stages) going for $399 and the Watteam power meter for $500

pretty scary how drastic those price drops are. Just shows hw much mark up theres on some bike kit!

NO its not that. As an ID we can afford to discount these prices but have to then leave out store margin.....

Which bike should one put a power meter on first? Mountain biking is the biggest priority but most of the training is done on the road during the week. Having said that, we are also starting to do most of these road rides on our mountain bikes. So...thoughts please.

Put it on your training bike. You need power measurements for training mostly.

Race pace is often dictated by other factors.

Have to agree. Recently acquired one, it has changed my training drastically. Laced onto my training wheels. For races I don't look that any metrics besides speed, cadence and distance.

That's just me though. Also do most of My training on road bike.
