Indeed! They all seemed very calm, not sure how i'd react to seeing all that blood gushing out, the vid was hectic enough!

The danger of being impaled by a handle bar is why I prefer bar ends like the cane creek spuds

I crashed in a race last year in April.Handle bars twisted and i fell with my chest on the Ritchey bar ends.

Broke 4 ribs and cracked 2 and had a nicked lung

Dr told me that that if it wasn't for the bar ends the bar would have gone into my chest.

The first crash happened a few groups in front of me as the medics was already at the bridge when we got there.

The second one happened a few riders in front of me. It happened on a flat wide gravel road a few km's from the start, must have been a touch of wheels. As I rode past the guy, all I heard was screaming and his partner waving frantically for someone to help. When we passed another rider said all he saw was a hell of a lot of blood, and that was only a few seconds after the crash!

At the end of the stage we heard from someone that the guy passed away, but later another guy who's partner also crashed mentioned that he saw this guy at the hospital and he was OK.

Strange that the organisers never mention anything about these things. Probably doesn't want any bad publicity.

Any idea of what happened to the guy who crashed near the bridge? There was PLENTY bloody there as well.

Yes but I'm not sure if I want to tell.Very interesting story that will bring the popcorn out.

So as Sasol have a involvement in the Epic someone thought it would be a great idea to have the Sasol rally car lead out the pro's through the neutral sections of the Epic. Now the story gets weird.Apparantly the rally car can't go below 50km/h or it begins to stall. So you have the position on stage 1 where the car goes 60km/h and starts dropping the A bunch then slows down and starts cutting out pissing off the riders who then come round the stalling rally car. This unfortunately happened as you enter Grabouw over the concrete bridge wide enough for 1 car.Rally car stalls,A bunch starts going round rally car, some guy mid pack A bunch connect with concrete bridge re arranging his face.Yes there was a lot of blood everywhere.

That application wasn't thought through properly now was it ?

Great prospective PR but almost turned into a disaster !!

Thanks, I take it the rider was ok.

Rode past the rider whilst medics were busy with CPR, it was a horrible thing to see!

Suddenly my fall the day before resulting in a fractured collar bone seemed very minor.

Also saw the rider who broke his neck/back on Plum pudding, not nice at all!

I hope all 3 riders are ok.

One of the key features of the Epic (for which you pay a lot) is the unbelievable infrastructure, the behind the scenes comms and medical/ logistical support is world class. It has to be for the category of event they put on. SA possess all those skills locally, but they have to be coordinated and placed on standby for 99% of the time, preferably behind the scenes to not spook people and then when it happens they need to be right there, almost immediately.

In 2012 I was struck at how quickly they got a medic to a guy in the veld having an epileptic fit, no fuss or drama, the rest of the race went on almost like its expected.

(I shudder to think of the liability some of the local races take on with their organisation.)

With the risks guys are taking in the Epic its a wonder that there haven't been more incidents - but its also probably testament to the team they have, that we don't get to know about them.

I don't hold Epic shares, but I think sometimes the organisation doesn't get the credit it deserves.

Glad those guys got the treatment they did and are living to tell the tale. Speedy recovery.

Where can I see the video of the cyclist hurt when the handlebar went into the body, I need to show my kid (7) years old what will/might happen when you jump off your bike because she doesn't stop, only jumps off the bike before she stop completely.

Actually they do get some exposure to an extent, mostly to those who took part..

I created the post-race photo annual from 2010 and every year was aimed more at the midfield and the crew behind the scenes. Obviously it was only the participants who received a copy so to back your statement, it not been a widely publicised service.
