To race VA

Whats your seeding index? You can train mega hours at high intensity, but if your index is above 20 you unfortunately wont get into vets.

But how much to train is like asking how long is a piece of string. Personally I would say its about quality training and not quantity. I am in the same situation as you(job, married,no kids unless 2 dogs and 2 cats count? ........) I TRY ride 1hr/1hr45m most mornings before work and then in the afternoon its either another hour on the bike or gym(weights, swim or run). I finish work fairly early(15h15) luckily but at the end of the day I need to be home by about 1700 the latest as there is always something that needs to be done at home(clean pool, mow lawn, make dinner......). On the weekends I try do 150/250 km but the intensity isn't as high. I race VA and am definitely not a front runner. So I would love to be able to train more but life gets in the way.

no kids, work till 15:15??? Bastardo!!!

Firstly, many thanks to some great posts, appreciate them.

My seeding index is currently around 15-16. I rode one or two events in like JL, was always late entries. Then went straight to AL.

Currently do about three gym sessions on the wattbike a week with one long ride on weekend.

My gym session is based on intervals so is pretty structured, I guess what it shows now is that I need to up the time alittle.

Maybe do one or two races in VA and then see how quickly I get dropped, lol.

Will try up my training hours.

Why don't you just give it a go? What is to lose?

I tried it, I sucked, got dropped everytime, won't do it again - but I'm still glad I gave it a try and it made me a stronger cyclist.

Yeah.

Without kids and that work schedule, you can become a PRO, man.

I start at 06h45 which means morning rides must be quite early :( . We can only have so many PRO's in this country, would hate to take a well deserved spot from someone :whistling: . PS: kids should be on the way soon.

Is that because you have to fix the Alfa the rest of the time? ^_^

My bicycle is Italian as well, even that leaks oil.

Is actually why I bought the bike, more reliable transport :-)

That's the plan, just wanted to benchmark before I try.

What seeding do you need to get into VA?

As Far as I have it, you need to have index lower as 20 but in bigger races they will take say 50 with lowest index.

My feeling is that you need to have index closer to 10 to ride comfortably in vets.

Unless you do not mind getting dropped after 20 km's and then joining the AL group in any case.

As I understand it you are supposed to have a Full Racing Licence not just the cyclosport licence to be seeded in  "V".  Actual seeding only comes into it after that and will depend greatly on the size of the field.

This is why AL was so strong at the recent Tour of Durban and why the "V" batches were so small.

I have a seeding of 13.29 so guess I will be able to hang with VA's.

I'm on about 5-6 (quality) hours per week (sometimes as much as 10 hours) and I can stay with VB in most races. If I get to 10 hours a week on a regular basis, I'll be able to help drive the pace, rather than chase it.

Trying to make the most of the hours I have available, and still have fun at the same time.

Edit: spelling

The word Cyclosport License doesn't exist anymore, it's now simply called CSA Membership.

The options are:

  • Full racing licence - racing categories
  • CSA Membership - alphabet groups
  • Day Licence (for non-CSA Members) - alphabet groups. This is not a "licence" and the word should be removed.
