Wahoo Kickr

So the wahoo seems to be the dogs bollocks when it comes to trainers. Read some reviews, watched the online vids and it seems really awesome.

Anyone on the hub actually bought one and can give real world feedback on it.

Is it worth dropping R16K on?

I've got one. Its awesome. Built like a brick sh1thouse and connects with lots of cool apps to make indoor workouts tolerable. Worth it for me, since the alternative in winter is riding in the dark and/or getting wet and soggy.

would be ver interested to hear more detailed views. I-magic is quite old now and I'm consider replacing just the brake with a Bushido or I-genius but the Kickr looks really good

Kickr is great due to it being future proof(BLE and Ant+ compatible), BUT its price point counts against it..

If you can afford it go for it, the powerbeam pro is quite a bit less with local support and easier to setup imo.

Interested to know how the Tacx integrate into 3rd party software as the Tacx units aren't included in the supported trainer lists for trainerroad or zwift or the cycleops virtual trainer.

A mate has the kickr and it seems to just work with everything, is quiet and has the most powerful brake.

Another thing to consider is that everything except the kickr requires a spare wheel and a trainer tyre which works out to about R1500 to R2k.

Yep its versatility is its strength, I believe you can actually run it in ergo mode on trainerroad for IOS without any dongles...which is pretty freakin cool....they still working on the powerbeam BLE i believe.

ITO of being quiet, yes it is, as is the powerbeam. You dont require a trainer tyre, a simple gatorskin on my rear is perfect, it doesnt vreet it up what so ever.

PS I think if they were priced the same i would have taken the kickr when I bought mine....I just couldnt justify the extra 60% more in price for the additional Ant+ channel, which I think is the only thing it had going for it.

But to each their own.

ITO versatility are you referring to the cycleops or the Tacx - I heard the closed channel on the Tacx means you can't dynamically control resistance from 3rd party software?

For me the cycleops is second to the kickr but mainly due to the rated power of the unit (half that of the kickr). Tested the cycleops at the 94.7 cycle expo and the price was alot better, but they're about 12k now as opposed to the 15.5k of the kickr.... if the cycleops was still 10k it would be a big difference.

Another plus for the kickr is that you can run a mountain bike on it without having to change anything.

Note my check list is related to limited time spent on each trainer, and my specific future needs in terms of a trainer. Still needing to buy one though.... probably in the next month.

On another note has anyone run any of these trainers on a UPS? Load shedding and all (which is obviously a plus for the Bushido).

I recently got the Kickr and it is great. The integration with things like Kinomaps is cool.  You just need decent ADSL speeds for the video feed.

The Kickr app works well on both Apple and Android. I run my heart rate monitor using Ant+ and the Kickr on Bluetooth and there are no issues with the apps.

I also got the 142x12 adaptor so I could use my MTB (the only bike I have) with the Kickr and there were no issues there at all.

Versatility wise, the kickr, kicks butt  :whistling: , its the best no arguing that...due to BLE and Ant+ compatibility. The tacx is probably the worst...you locked into TTS and that is it. The powerbeam is second to the kickr I agree, because of this, but is it worth the extra money. For me it wasn't, might be different for other. Wrt the power rating, I can guarantee you will never run out of brake so to speak, have gone through a big range with it and I don't think us amateurs even take it to its limits...its brake delivery is also very very smooth and realistic meaning it won't feel like you climbing stairs but rather a hill...

PS shop around on the powerbeam, you might be able to pick up a good deal, but go for the BLE version if you do.
