Here are a few that I have done:

- Attakwas - undoubtedly the hardest 3 races of my life, but also very rewarding.

- Cape Pioneer Trek - Costs about half of what the Epic does. If you are coming all teh way from Pretoria, you may as well make the travel cost worth while.

- Trans Baviaans - Had a very good Trans Baviaans. It does get long and lonely at times, but thought that it was not as tough as Attakwas for me. You get the same sense of journey when you start at one point and end beyond a few mountains.

On my to-do list

- Desert Dash

- Trans Draak

- Ride to Rhodes

The 3 day stuff are all good motivation, but it seldom takes to that dark corner in your soul where you go to after a very hard 4 or 5 hours on the bike with another 4 or 5 hours to go.

Make that 4 or 5 very hard hours on the bike with another 14 or 15 hours to go

I have often considered events lie Attakwas and TransBaviaans but the logistics for someone coming from Jobeg always puts me off.

How do guys do it?

Make an adventure of it? Book accommodation at the start/finish, have someone drive down with you to second you. It is really not that bad, do it once and you won't look back.

I haven't done TB but have done a couple of Attas. Fly to George, rent a car, book the car shuttle service, drive to Oudtshoorn, stay over Friday night, pedal to Groot Brak, collect car, book into Hotel/ B & B in George, fly back on Sunday.

None of the races are that affordable any more! This weekend in Clarens cost close to R4500, excluding the entry fees!

If you do any of the events in another province or where accommodation is a requirement, you won't get away with much change from R5000.

This includes fuel, accommodation and food for the average family of 4...
