Broken Spoke

Today on red route at northerns as my back wheel hit the ground on a drop I heard a odd noise.. My friend still thought I had fallen, when we pulled over to check found my one spoke is broken. I was hoping it was a case of just sticking it back into the nipple ( I believe that's what it's called ????) - but it wouldn't reach so don't know if I lost a piece along the way. About 5mm too short.

Rode another 16 odd Kim's with it - just doing bumpy stuff a bit more gingerly, we just stuck it to another spoke with a patch - so it wouldn't flop around. How bad is it?

So a) can I still ride this long weekend with risking more damage to me or bike,

B) new wheels or can I send it to the wheel guru at summit? Estimate damage to bank balance to fix?

Replace and true the wheel again. Have all spokes checked at the same time. Spokes are in the region of 20 to 30 bucks and to true about 150. So not bad at all. I go through that excersize quite often. Try your mates in greenstone or Johnson cycles. Both pretty good.

R150 to true a wheel? Good grief, the last I had a wheel trued, it cost R30 bucks.

A dial gauge for truing is a bit of an expensive piece of equipment for home use, especially if you going to use it once or twice a year. Would not recommend truing without one.

There are many things I will try to fix on my own on my bike, but replacing spokes and truing a wheel I will rather leave to the experts.

With you there. But with the long weekend I guess it will have to wait till Tuesday. So I assume it's not a problem riding with one broken spoke.

i wouldn't ride the wheel as is pop a spoke in and even if its not perfectlly true you can still ride

Its relatively  easy to replace spokes...that being said Murphy's law its the side on the rotor or cluster so it means removing those...Tubeless wheels if you can pop in a new spoke and use the existing nipple makes it a lot easier...Otherwise make a hole in the tape use new nipple and ride a tube until you get to the bike shop.

I usually replace the broken spoke and true the wheel as best I can...remember you actually have to bend the bend/bow the spoke to make it fit.And then I pop down to my LBS and they true the wheel for about R100

Replacing the spoke by LBS

Bike shop ½ hour Labor...around R200

cost of spoke.....................around  R10

Would take it a bit easier if I were you. What size rim? Can borrow you a loaner if you want.

Wow. That's pretty awesome of you thanks. I ride 650b but I'll just wait or take a very chill ride. I guess it serves me right for just having one bike

I'm very mechanically inept and even if YouTube could show me, all the stores are closed till Tuesday. But a good skill to learn I guess.

Check if the Trailhead is open tomorrow. Might be worth it.

If you had a spoke I would gladly sort this out for you for free.

Thanks Maxxis  :)

i'll see if someone's open tomorrow and can sort me out, feels like a waste of a day off not going for a spin -but it's not a train smash if I can't.

Shyte. That is the one size I don't have. Plenty 26ers and 29ers. Sorry dude.

Cheers mate. No worries. I appreciate the offer.
