Hi All,

Its my twin's birthday soon and I would like to buy them some bicycles again.

I bought them bicycles 2 years ago with training wheels, at about 3 they could ride without the training wheels.

I am looking for a place to buy them like 16" bicycles in Pretoria or centurion....

The catch is that I have to buy two at once, so I am looking for cheap bicycles, I phone around and can some Avalanch bicycles for around R1000, that's not bad if you have to buy 1.

I phoned nearly all the bike shops and nothing less than R900.

Do you guys know where i can buy really cheap bicycles, I don't care about brand?

Bought this for my daughter. A Titan Calypso 16 inch. A bit out of your price range (R2000) but worth every cent.

Runs smoothly, the brakes are excellent, and its relatively light.

She is really confident riding this bikes and looking at her ride it I can only assume that it handles well.

Felt like a lot of money for a kiddies bike at the time, but no regrets now.

Can`t tell where to get cheap bikes but I would always give Linden cycles a bash(Jhb unfortunately) as they cater for all price ranges and I have always had better deals than any of the Makros/Game budget stores could offer. If i can give you any advise it would be to not worry about suspension as the lower priced bikes have useless suspension forks which are generally much to stiff to be of any use and just add weight. Rather buy a rigid fork bike with minimal gears as this will be lighter and probably better at this price point.

Are they turning 5 or turning 6?

16" is only really for 4-6 year olds, so you may not get a lot of use out of them.  Can they stretch to 20" or are they shorties?

I like that Titan Calypso though - it was top of the list for my daughter for Christmas but then ended up getting something else entirely.  Had a look at them in the shop and they seem like good bikes.

I bought a Muna bike from Sportmans Warehouse for my 5 year old and he loves it. It was just over R1000 if I remember correctly, but it is really well built. They had a decent range of kid's bikes - might be worth a visit.

Stay away from the game specials! The quality is very bad in comparison to the bikes twice its price, which would be expected. You however will have endless repairs with two in the house.

As suggested try stretching for a 20 inch and pay more. They might struggle initially on the size, but it won't be long before they get comfortable. You will however save a lot in the long run. They will be fine on the 20 inch. Unless they are small and only turning 5, but even then you could get away with it. If you buy the cheaper reputable brands mentioned it will be much better than the fading china quality game sells. The china plastic/rubber lasted 4 months on my boy's rear tyre. The wheels are completely out of true and hence the brakes are dangerous/pathetic. General quality is useless.

The other boy's axis is 3 times as old and lasting much, much better. He was tall enough to put straight into the 20 inch when turning 4 yrs (hard push) and hence I spent the money.

The new 16 inch avalanche bikes are pretty nice, no more back pedal breaks and front and rear brakes. I think that they offer the best bang for your buck, IMO the game or makro bikes are just not worth it - the quality is just what you expect for the price.

My kids are both on 16 inch avalanche's (I paid around R1500 for both last Christmas) at 4 and 5 and a half years old. I see myself going up to 20 inch when my son hits 6 and a half, but he is a taller boy and has pretty much outgrown the 16 inch.

With your kids turning 5 you could be on the cusp of going 20 inch, consider carefully the larger size, you might be outgrowing a 16 inch in 6 months or you could be getting bikes too big for your kids to ride. There are measurement charts online for sizing, check them out.

At much less than R1000 you will just buy yourself some problems.  Ask me how I know.

My wife went out a few years ago to buy my second boy a bike.  Dude rode down the driveway and the rear hub fell apart.

try Mr Price Sport.  I bought my little guy a diamondback for about R700 last year some time.

I was also worried about not going to a LBS etc but my son has never had an issue with his bike and he does trash the thing. Also they start hitting growth spurts at their age so i wasn't prepared to waste money.
