PE Fish Farm Petition

I'm not convinced how close would the swim course even be?

They're doing Rio Olympics in raw sewerage next year so don't think some fishtanks in the region means it has to be one or the other.

edit:so the swim course is about max 300m offshore. not even a 6th of the way toward the closest this place could be. very alarmist

It's the fact that it would attract sharks and make it completely unsafe to swim there

I just spoke to a friend of mine who knows quite a bit about it.

Apparently its unlikely to go ahead.

Those fish farms attract large flocks of birds and due to the location of the airport it poses a risk to planes.

Ja, I saw that too, but highlighted the dodgy statements. Would be a bit embarrassing if someone tells the athletes there are already sharks there and they call it off as being too dangerous.

Algoa Bay Great White Shark Project

Senior scientists have established through aerial and boat surveys that the most tagged sharks along South Africa's coastline are found in Algoa Bay.

Dr Matt Dicken from KwaZuluNatal Sharks Board, in collaboration with the Bayworld Centre for Research and Education, says  by understanding the movement patterns and occurrences of the white sharks, possible attacks could be mitigated.

“The white sharks are generally found in Algoa Bay, off shore around the seal colony of Bird Island in winter, and they typically then move close in-shore in the summer,” Dicken says.

Valid point

IMO its just a *** idea, over and above the other arguments as per videos:

  1. How healthy can it be to eat those fish if they grow up "farmed" in those tanks
  2. The sea views will be *** with all those things sticking out.
  3. How long will those tanks last in the sea conditions and where will the broken pieces end up?

Or that more guys die doing the Ironman due to drowning than anything else, so maybe just cancel the swimming in water thing all together.

Look I see the frustration about this, but using the shark angle is a just a cheap attempt to play on humans natural fear. Making this about the "Ironman" will also just come across as a bunch of selfish high income middle aged men.

People who care about the Ironman are far outnumbered by people who are about sustainable protein sources. In other words poor people, who out number Ironmen and therefore carry a greater voter bases, so guess which one will be supported by politicians.

The bird/airplane thing seems more legit and relevant.

I read all the "negative" impacts this will have on that website, and to one honest, a lot of them seem speculative and could be countered with positive rebuttals.

I am not defending the farms at all, I have no place to as I'm not from PE and it won't directly affect me and my beaches, but what I'm trying to illustrate is the thinking about this, and that ultimately I'm sorry to say that this is probably not a battle that will be won by triathletes.

Sorry, I do not agree.

It will go ahead but fail.

The current Cob (Salmon) farm is "running" but not making money.

This whole thing will happen to a certain degree, job creation, BEEEEEEEEE etc, etc, etc,  but will have to close at a later stage.  Who knows what the damage will be by then.

There, I said it first and am pretty close to the ground on this one.

Farmed fish is the way to go but we are not that hungry yet and need to be educated in this regard.  Easier to poach than buy.

Its not sustainable. Read up on the salmon farms in N. America and Chile, and tuna farms in Thailand etc. All major ecological fuckups making a few people rich and requiring massive inputs of wild caught fish in addition to other major impacts to endemic coastal sea life.
