QUESTION

Why am I breaking Chainring Bolts on climbs?

INFO

This the second time I have broken chainring bolts from steep climbs.

The first time was 2 weeks ago when riding single speed (34-20) at the Wilde Gravel Travel.

The chainring bolt that broke that time was a CSIXX.

Tonight 2 bolts broke on my commute home over Kloofnek

Set up now is 1x10 and the bolts in question are KCNC.

The crankset is a Race Face NW 34T coupled with Shimano XT crank arms.

Really frustrated at the moment. Is this going to happen every time I put some power to the pedals?

I have KCNC ones...no problems for the past year... Same Raceface NW chainring, Shimano crank...

Do you torquewrench?

Do you torquewrench?

Had them installed at LBS when the 991's broke. Will ask them.

Where are you? If in Cape Town on me. Will help out.

Sweet! I'm in the Atlantic Sea Board. Going to LBS tomorrow morning. I always get great service from them and I feel they should know about this.

I will message you when this is resolved and if this happens again!

thanks mate!

Are you using spacers between the crank and the NW ring?

Does the base (female) side of the chain ring protrude past the chainring into the crank spider?

Are you possibly over torquing the bolts?

Riding 34-20 SS you must be standing up and pushing hard on the hills. What size wheels?

Chainring bolts are acailable in steel and in titanium. Both are stronger than KCNC alu.

You need to lay off the HTFU stuff a bit.........you just got too strong from the SS.............take a month or 3 and be lazy......before you know it, you'll be too weak to break chainring bolts! ;)  Otherwise get stronger bolts, steel or titanium. :)

No Spacers

The base side does not protrude it is sitting flush.

Not sure about the torque, LBS installed, I will ask them tomorrow.

Try diluting your Cytomax before you grow an unwanted appendage or snap a crank arm. That stuff is evil I tell you...

By Cytomax you mean Ouma's rusks and coffee yeah I'm trying!
