Anyone on a vegan diet?

As people that have been around here for a while will know, I was vegetarian for 27 years and vegan for brief periods.

 

Started eating meat 18 months ago. A number of reasons. Mostly health.

No I'm not, just about everything I eat is meat or nuts. Been on it for about 12 weeks .... Lost 18kg's and haven't felt this good in years. Did Walkerville Saturday and averaged 24+ k's an hour, no issues ......

 

I call it the 'I'm old enough to know what I should and shouldn't eat' diet.

im not vegan however im also not a believer in the pap,artappels, rys en vleis brigade..

 

I am really particular and annoying about what I put into my body however and enjoy learning from others experience

i am just wondering because the main idea is that a LOT of studies have show that vegan get same amount of protein and amino accids as meat eaters , the reason for eating meat being to get protein

there are lots of sources of protein and carbs available - meat being obviously a popular one but there are lots of others - its just more difficult because you cant pop down to your corner café at lunchtime and find other varied sources - hence most people have a chicken mayo sandwich - its easy :w00t:

I love food. Why should I discriminate and only eat a certain type. Off to dinner. Steak chicken salad and potatoes. Might have some chocolate cake too.

im not advocating here im just answering the OPs question

I discovered long ago that god and diet and politics aren't worth getting into about :D

If you are training hard or are very physically active you need around 1.5g of protein per day per kg of body weight. Some studies suggest you need 2 g. I can tell you that is very difficult as a vegetarian.

 

Black beans are the highest source of protein I found as a vegetarian. 40% protein. That's amazing. Thing is it's dry weight. Once cooked it about 5 times more per weight. It means I had to eat 650g of cooked black beans a day. That is to get 125 g of protein. Do you have any idea what will happen to you if you manage to eat that much black beans? It's not pretty. Trust me.

Vitamin B, Iron, Omega 3, Vitamin D, Calcium.

Yup, and high levels of amino acids.

 

Humans evolved to eat meat and plants, not exclusively the one or the other. Enough data to show meat is highly nutrient dense and we need it in our diets.

It would be very difficult to get in sufficient protein as a vegetarian unless you include protein shakes and soya. Soya is supposedly the only vegetarian food source containing protein made up of all the amino acids that a meat derived protein is made up of, which apparently means it's bioavailability is much higher than other vegetarian protein sources. If your protein intake is low, your muscles can't recover and rebuild properly. I'm a former competitive bodybuilder, I found that as soon as I stopped competition and reduced my meat (protein) intake, I lost muscle very rapidly.

Every time someone says you can't be vegan and be healthy I think of this guy

 

Vegan tends to be more lifestyle than just diet .., do no harm products etc.., it's a lot easier now with supplements etc... But while I've threatened to make the step over from veg to vegan - never happened yet.

Vegetarian / vegan diet.

Have been vegetarian for 12 years, have no issues with protein. Much healthier than eating meat.
