Tacx trainers now unlocked

It has been mentioned more that once or twice that while tacx has some nice trainers their closed system allowing tacx owners to only use tacx software is a serious negative.

I am on my second Tacx trainer and while I really like the device I totally agree with the above sentiments. I was therefore very pleased when this morning I received an email from Tacx announcing that they have ow unlocked their trainers and owners of Tacx devices now have a number of third party software options to choose from.

I am certainly going to be looking at some of the options. Tacx mentions Swift, BKool, Kinomap and Trainer Road specifically. I am not familiar with any of this software so any input from current users would be most useful.

I have downloaded the app that Tacx tells me is needed to update the trainer firmware so as I try this out I will post my experiences here to help any other Tacx users that might want to explore this option.

I use Trainerroad with my Wahoo Kickr, really enjoy it and find it very productive. I follow one of their training programs and find that gives me the extra motivation I need to get on the IDT.

You are so right in the software issues.

(Hence I'm exited that this might allow me to use less of the Tacx software)

from DC RainMaker

A) Tacx Bushido Smart Trainer

B) Tacx Vortex Smart Trainer

Why not other trainers? Well, Tacx has said that their other electronic trainers (such as their Genius and non-Smart series) don’t have enough channels on the older ANT+ chips within them to enable control.  Similarly, for cheaper trainers such as their Tacx Satori Smart, that doesn’t support automated (computerized) control, since it has a cable control mechanism – so that’s not supported either.

To summarize, the following trainers are not supported:

A) Tacx Satori Smart (physically cable-controlled)

B) Tacx Genius series (older non-Smart unit, they haven’t released a ‘Genius Smart’ model)

C) Tacx Bushido (non-Smart)

D) Tacx Vortex (non-Smart)

E) Anything else that’s not in the section previous to this

So how do you upgrade your trainer? Via a simple app. Tacx today released a new utility app called ‘Tacx Utility’, this app connects to your Smart series trainer and updates the trainer’s firmware.  Once upgraded, then 3rd party apps that support the ANT+ Trainer Profile can control it as they see fit.

Bought the Vortex smart last week.

Now need to get an iPad 3 to use with the trainer (my kids' iPad minis and ipad2 aren't compatible -  anyone got a second hand iPad3 (or newer) to sell?

And do I then need the Ant+ adaptor as well?

Looking forward to training on it once I've got the entire ecosystem up and running. Right now doing basic rides on the mobile Android app, and that's not worth much.
