I own the iGenius and Fortius (for the wife) and even when I have to admit the software is not the best or greatest..it is still an awesome piece of equipment. I have about 30+ RLV routes and the new blu ray ones are incredible.  The software has improved a lot in terms of functionality. At this point (being winter) I use mine around 3 times a week and the software works perfectly every time. I must admit I do not really use the VR part or Catalyst part of the software. I think the RLV routes offer more than what one needs and one can simply create custom routes to fit your exact requirements (climbing, time trial etc).  I feel training around 70-80 minutes at a time gives one a really good workout. I personally would not use other software even if the iGenius was capable. Investing in the RLV routes was quite the capital spending..

This is great news. This basically makes the tacx smart range of trainers similar to wahoo kickr and powerbeam for much cheaper price. I'm sure wahoo and cycleops will now need to cut prices. I have the tacx vortex smart trainer and think its a great trainer, the only downside was being locked into their system-and their software was the weak point. Now that no longer applies. For those interested bike24.net offers this trainer for about 300 euro, its now a pretty good option in my view.

Knowing tacx their will still be some teething problems.

Bought the Vortex smart last week.

Now need to get an iPad 3 to use with the trainer (my kids' iPad minis and ipad2

aren't compatible - anyone got a second hand iPad3 (or newer) to sell?

And do I then need the Ant+ adaptor as well?

Looking forward to training on it once I've got the entire ecosystem up and running. Right now doing basic rides on the mobile Android app, and that's not worth much.

Azi, with the new software options your phone may be ok? Second, i bought a cheapish 10 inch mecer tablet for the trainer off takealot. Works perfect. Just make sure you get the one with bluetooth 4 and kitkat 4.4 operating system.

Drop us a mail if you are interested in any of the Tacx Trainers. Pretty sure we will be most competitively priced:)

I'm sure there are a few of us keen so just ballpark the compatible models prices please.

I have the Flow with the upgrade but i'm considering upgrading further

Bummer. My trainer is not supported. Ah well. I have no complaints with the software but I can be a geek sometimes

So we do the Tacx evenings again this winter? :D

Yea, interested as well.

Might be nice to compare  a few products.

i own both makes tacx and cycleops currently , trust me the 2 products cannot be compared, i have "old faithfull" tacx still ,,, i had the new model which i sold   the units are simply day and night

more details Dibs? old faithfull ?

which ones can you hook up to follow a route? and do they only have road routes ?

old faithfull is a tacx fortius,,,one of the first models i used to use it for the  training programs,

i have a few videos and i see there is a option for "live racing" never used it, you can follow route/races if you buy the software for that old model, it is bullet proof ive had it for years,,

that the difference with tacx/cycleops

no software issues and no need to buy software, any route you want 2 min and you riding it

The phone apps don't allow the ability to customise workouts.

Also, the new 'open' software is only downloadable on Apple for now (I have a Samsung S4 mini phone and a Note Tab (1st gen)).  And as Samsung SA seem to have decided not to release KitKat in SA on the first gen Note Tabs (it is available in some European countries since Q3, 2014) my tablet is also useless for the Tacx application. I have heard of people 'rooting' their tabs and then being able to download Kitkat but don't have a clue where to begin.

Your Mecer suggestion sounds good, though as I've just realised how important continued support is I would be interested in finding out whether Mecer is committed to releasing new software for 'older' tabs. I find it bitter to swallow that Samsung only releases one major operating system update a year after release for a top of range tablet and then basically abandons the range. They've just lost an 'ecosystem' customer because of this.
