Btw Milky... even if the guys charge 400% or so, negotiate. Negotiate negotiate negotiate.

400% is probably going to be the norm, unfortunately

lets say I negotiated them down to 300% or 200% that still more than I'm will to pay out of my pocket. Will take a gap cover policy & do the surgery after year once I become elgible to. The surgery is not a must right now so I can still do it later, another year or 2 is not going to make a difference.

That's what I would suggest, if you can deal with it for another year and 2 months (application, start date and exclusion allowances) cos then you'll have cover up to 5 times med aid rates.

In the meantime though, ask them to check out the costs involved with a reconstruction. Then check with your medical aid as to what they'd cover...

I work with Richard.A real great guy and cyclist, great reputation.

Just start talking mtb and then throw in the discount question.

Just go for a consultation with him and then decide.

Always worth negotiating with specialists they will often drop their rates. The anaesthetists are the problem you don't get to see them before hand and then they hit you with a huge bill. Often more than the surgeon

Deon's regular anaesthetist does not fall into this mold. I can't recommend Deon enough.

Go see Dr Sirk Loots (Orthopedic Surgeon).  He is an avid mtbér and will not charge you an arm and a leg.  His practice is at Chris Barnard Hospital in the city. He operated on me and did a great job.

Agreed. Several Epics I think. Open cards re fees. It is all negotiable.

Philosophical question: Why have it repaired? If it is for pain then surely you have tried everything else - two years sounds like a long time then. If it is to prevent further damage (arthritis and meniscus) then again two years is a long time. Fees are unlikely to come down so as the Captain says: gap cover or a higher plan. BTW any plan that restricts you to certain hospitals or groups can bite you in the arse badly (a discussion for another day).

the latter. Cycling is pain free it's when I cycle competitively that's when the pain kicks in & I can't turn that off...yet.

If I go Gap Cover I'll only have to wait a max of 12months.
