Clothing for wet conditions

I need some advice.

After all the years of cycling in SA I never had to worry about this before but now living in Europe I have to deal with riding in wet conditions.

For those die hard cyclists who will go out training regardless of weather ... please let me know what you wear.  I am not concerned about the cold now.  I am fairly familiar with cold weather conditions in general and know I will have to get better quality gloves for that purpose.  I am more interested in what to wear for wet conditions (warm and cold).

I will be buying a mountain bike soon so the plan is in good weather (aka dry conditions) I hit the road with the road bike but for wet conditions I will be out on the mountain bike.

Thanks in advance.

Waterproof booties and gloves - to keep those extremities dry

Castelli Gabba jersey - waterproof yet breathable

Once temps go under 0, rather roll indoors

Surely 'ze Germans!' have many solutions for this?

Yes they do.  Too many actually and asking a salesman advice is like going to a prostitute to confess.

I do not want to end up buying stuff that is not quite adequate. You need to consider the fact there is a huge amount of different cyclists here.  Asking someone who commutes to the train station 3 km away and then hop onto the train to go to office would propably not be the best person to ask as he is not doing 30 km more intensive training in wet conditions.

You see old ladies with huge rain coats covering themselves and the bike and all the shopping loaded on the bike. ^_^

Would the jersey suffice in warmer wet conditions as well or would it be to hot under it?

Gargle some reviews

I reckon you just vary your base layering and gilets to adjust to various temps.

Castelli Gabba is good or anything Goretex.

There is always a lot of kit in euro that is Goretex based as outer wear and then you can layer around it. It's magic stuff when the weather turns arse. I've alway made sure I've got it for all my snow kit, heli kit and at least one solid piece for cycling.

Bottom half then you can get some decent Castelli wet / cold options in tights or tough it out flemish style with shorts and knee warmers (if you're feeling like a wuss).

There is going to be an abundance of decent options over there because they are built and prepared for it.

Craft also do a version of the Gabba as do almost every major manufacturer now. I recently got one with short sleeves and the matching all weather arm warmers but it's more of a wet weather racing jersey so not a cold weather barrier. Keeps you warm (more about wind chill) and dry in all but the biggest of downpours.

Only issue I found with it is that they didn't tape all the seams so at some point it's gonna leak. Also noticed at the spring classics that OGE were using them as opposed to most of the peloton who were again in blank Gabbas instead of their sponsors products.

Gabba is the bench mark for pros.

I rode this morning in the drizzle and it was about 15 degrees. I wear a Halley Hansen long sleeve top and then put my cycling jersey over that. If it were colder I would add a Gilet. Halley tops are for paddlers but are one of the best at retaining warmth whilst wet and I use it often for my cycling when training in the rain. I spent two hours on the bike and I did notice my legs and toes were cold but my upper body was fine.
