Is there truth in the (new Specialized) rumour?

I have both. And you have it completely wrong. First service is after 50 hours, thereafter every 150 hours. Worth every penny.

I am afraid you have it completely wrong - http://www.specialized.com/OA_MEDIA/pdf/suspension_intervals_9_18.pdf

Thus a minor service which can be done by a qualified mechanic at any bike shop every 50 hours. I have had my minor service done at the concept store in Cedar Square.

Then every 150 hours(or every 3rd service) the suspension gets sent to HQ for a major service.

This is world wide and has nothing to do with Spez trying to screw South Africans...

How am I wrong by stating the brain only needs servicing every 150 hours? That 50 hour service is just a lube and clean jobby. The brain does not get opened or sent away.

My bad. Thought you were referring to the suspension as a whole... You are quite correct that the brain is only every 150 hours

Specialized proprietary parts have to be serviced by someone who is authorised by Specialized in order to maintain the warranty.

<snip snip>

I can confirm that the above is true. So included is the Brain suspension (the actual brain cartridges) and FSR linkage.

For example a normal 25 hour service on a fork can still be done by any bikeshop, but when the actual brain cartridge needs to be serviced, it must be done by Specialized.

All Spez threads turn into Spez hating threads...........sucks.

I love their products, how the shops choose to do business is their own business. Live and let live.

You get it sent to them in their service department in wherever you go to and they do it I assume.?

This was one of the questions I had - which was maybe overwhelmed by some of the other posts.

What about when you are in the sticks? Are they happy with your LBS taking it and sending it to them or does this void the warranty?

Just checking on the details as this warranty thing seems to be a very nefarious thing on bicycles:  Like I sell it to another guy but only the original purchaser has the warranty?

How does that work?

Do i void it if i take the fork off complete and send it away myself to them when in Putsonderwater?

So you see all the potential holes and twists and turns along the way that need to be cleared up when these things are brought in to being.

Just asking

BTW - love Specialized products - have 2 of their bikes in the garage and have ridden their MTB's for 10 years now.

So i think the Brain is the Shiz.

Also covered in Specialized kit when riding - jackets, gloves, shoes etc.

So no Specialized knocking here.

Trying to understand something.

So FWIW - I am a major fan.

One would hope they have a bit of common sense. Some small towns don't even have local bike shops, and to drive and hand in your bike in the city is not economical at all.

I dont think you can send it directly to Stellies though. It will have to be sent to a store which in turn will have to send it to HQ...

I have taken off my fork and shock at home before and took it in to the shop to have serviced. They didn't give me any hassles...

I get what you are saying in the analogy to cars however its not like the components of a bike are unique or as technical as a cars in terms of the servicing of it, so I dont buy it.

I'm with Martin on this one. Apart from set up and tweaking there's VERY little on a car that is so specialized that only the manufacturer will be able to work on it. MOST parts are bought in from specialists in their field. Yes, there's some integration and optimization, but not to the point where a BMW mechanic won't or can't work on an Audi.

Some manufacturers have special tools to remove some parts as part of their "work-around" involves a different way to fit and therefor a special tool to remove. Volvo near the top of that list.

I would go so far as to say that unless their overhauling your engine or DSG gearbox, any good mechanic at any leading dealership will be able to work on any car. Changing filters, belts, plugs and lubes aren't exactly rocket science.

There's some gain for us as consumers by having a guy work on our cars who knows the quickest way to get whatever in and out. Therein also lies lots of frustration as the monotony of it often leads to oversights or rushed jobs.

I don't see how this can be true for anything BUT the Brain suspension bits.

It would make sense for them to have an exclusive warranty on their proprietary components.

But for the other components, why would it void your warranty? Why would I lose my warranty on my Spez frame if somebody adjusts my chain? How would they even monitor this?

Its the same for cars, you service you BMW at a Merc dealership there would be issues.

But the local garage can change your tyres and fill up your oil levels.....

Just doesn't seem plausible.

I know for some of the Jeeps with synthetic oil, they don't let you fill up your own oil :w00t:

I must be some kind of stupid then, as i have a Volvo, nogals with a rare engine, AND am seriously looking into buying a Spez?

In all seriousness though, I don't get all the Spez hate going on, most guys who go hating have and will never own one, so their opinions mean very little, and it's not like Spez owners go out chirping the Lefty riders the whole time for riding something that can also only be serviced at dedicated centres.

As a brand with lost of proprietary tech they are more than in the right for insisting that their trained technicians work on certain parts in order to uphold a warranty. I could not find any information in either their owner's manual or warranty documentation that specifies that only a dealer can work on their bikes. Again, could we get clear confirmation from a dealer on that.

Take it easy
