Is 1x11 for everyone

So this is my thinking.

I am in need of a new drivetrain but I am thinking I should hold out until I can get the Shimano M8000 XT 11 speed, The Derailer, shifter, cassette and chain, and a 32T about R5.5K  

However at 95KG hills are not by strong point , so the 42 Tooth cassette should help, however Shimano range is only 11-42 and with a 32T upfront I could lose out on the flats, my stronger point.
 
I’m thinking maybe I should just stick to 2x10, but in winter I hate the chain suck and am always being let down by a seizing or mud clogged front derailer.
 
Anyone got any advice

You can go the Shimano XT 11 speed route and get the one up conversion which will increase your cassette to 45t.

 

You then use a 34t on the front and have a much better top end on the flats but can still grind away in Granny up the hills.

And then run a 34 or 36 in front (instead of 32) to get a bit more top end if you need it.

 

With the 45t extender the modified Shimano 11-45 cassette has only 3% less range than SRAM 10-42

I rode at Giba a while back and was very thankful for the full range that 2x10 offers. I won't easily change to 1x anything unless the range is right.

1x10 or 1x11 isnt for everyone. on very steep punchy hills, you may find yourself putting in more effort than you want to, with a very tired finish as a result.

2x10 gives a very rideable mix of gears, especially if you are a Buffalo.

Combat chainsuck by replacing your chainrings for new fairly often. they are consumables and really suck when worn...

You will only spin out on long dowmhills. Flats should be no problem. I honestly don't think the occasional downhill at more than 50km/h should dictate your choice but I use the 10t at the back more than the 42t.

I love my 1X10 setup. Like many things you just need to find some people who's opinion you trust then drink whatever coolade they're selling and try not stress.

Must admit I'm ambivalent about 1x10.....

My legs have definitely gotten stronger but if I take my bike on a Lesotho trip the 2x10 is going straight back on. Also if I do any longish rides on road.

For the trails around Pmb where I mostly ride, none of the uphill sections have gradients too steep for 1x10

I always vote for 2x or 3x

Personally if I have to go 11 speed

I would like a 11-42 casette with 28/42 crank (on 27.5" wheels)

I understand the appeal of 1x for xc racing and trail bikes. I don't understand why one would use it for marathon riding though.

I recently moved over from 3x9 to 2 x10 and can say I miss the very light granny gear. However I am starting to cope with 2x10 if its a 1x system then I will definitely suffer!!

Me being in the same boat (weight/drive-train upgrade) have been wondering about it myself. I am upgrading wheel size to 27.5 and I am looking at the SRAM XO1 set-up with a 30T or 32T chainring.  I do not do a lot of flat riding but I am a bit worried about the top end and having sufficient granny compared to my current 9-speed.

I have 1x10 (with 40t extender) on my beefy AM ride.

 

I am fine for 99% of rides but it can be a pain on those endless hills.

 

Def keeping 2x10 on my hard tail bike which I use for Argus etc.
