I bought one similar to the second one a while ago on ebay, it only recently arrived (thanks sapo) but i have not had time to play with it. As far as i know the one i got works of gsm towers so it will give you a basic idea of where it is and not the actual gps location but like i said i still have to play with it.

Thanx - wonder if the first one is more accurate? Just think the jump in price is gonna translate badly to SA costs if one would want to do it commercially.

Makes me wonder... Not that I have capital to play around with right now but I'm suitable indignant about all these beep, beep, beepers getting away with what they are... As some one asked the other day "where are all the bike going too"???

Did you get hammered on taxes on arrival?

Came in without any taxes.

I couldn't see the size of the second device tho but a really good price... Any idea what they could retail for locally - add tax and vat?

Anyone here explored the options of bringing something like this in direct from the manufacturers? Considering how much insurers must be paying out for bikes these days surely there must be someone or company who can supply this locally....??

The size is a bit bigger than a matchbox, 6 cm by 4 cm by 17mm. If you buy this on eBay you pay the price indicated, there won't be VAT and taxes. The item is too small.

As with anything cheap, the functionality can be a bit buggy. So if you are importing loads of them you would need to do your research to make sure the product can be sold to hundreds or thousands of customers. Maybe import a few and test market them to see what customers say about it. No good supplying something and people return half of them.

Make sure the unit that you buy is a true GPS and not a tracker system that works off the cellphone towers. The cellphone tower tracker option is not accurate enough.

I just made a date to go ride around Cape Point first thing in the morning - and then I see this thread! ****!  :cursing:

Yeah, and I used to do that on sun morn as well. Then starting riding with a buddy in durbanville around the fisantekraal area and read about the attempted muggings there

 Where to now

Posted

Just heard 2 more people were mugged and bikes taken

Does anyone know if it was mountain bikers on the blackhill trail or guys on the actual blackhill tarmac toad?

the cops had a road block at the fishoek traffic intersection of the black hill road at about twelve today looked like they where blocking traffic going up

hopefully its a mugger down and not another cyclist

We saw that at about 10h00 when we cycled past. The road blocks were both on the Glencairn side and the Sunvalley side of Black Hill. I don't know what it was for.

Because of this post, Beattbox and I decided to ride through Fish Hoek rather than over Black Hill. (That's my story anyway, and anybody that says it was because my legs were stuffed, is a damn liar. ;) ) Sorry to hear more people were mugged. :cursing:

I go all the way around red hill has always been dodge and black hill is now not safe either so you just have to suck it up and go round kommetjie

its still not good enough though its not like the thieves are escaping into greater cape town

the thieves and the bikes are still right there in one of three quite small locations within walking distance unless they wait till dark and use a vehicle on the ...let me think ...oh yes the only two roads out of there

me thinks we (cyclists) aren't important enough for law enforcement to really try hard to stop this

suppose us locals will just have to get mugged till the summer tourists arrive then when one of them gets mugged the matter will get some attention

yay cape town this city works for some of you

Hi guys

The muggings have been on the same secluded and overgrown section of single track alongside blackhill rd/glencairn express way.

We have been building the mtb skills park, just a bit further down the road, and have been in contact with city council.

They seem keen to clear the alien vegetation, so there is a clear line of sight, but its a big job so will take a while!

We are busy discussing security services patrols there on sat/sun mornings.

Until there is a plan in place, please do not ride that upper section of overgrown trail!

So is it the area leading up to the trail and not trail itself where the attacks are taking place?
