I was in AL.

At the RH turn towards to dam, over the railway line, there sounded like a crash behind me at the railway crossing.

Did someone go down, and are they OK?

I did find the mid pack a little jittery, with one or two guys making me nervous. I took a gap and mover further up to the front and felt better.

First time up Hekpoort in a proper race, and I actually enjoyed it. I did get dropped, but not scared of it anymore.

I was on the inside line there and cross line also almost coming down.

There were no mats on that side of the road. I cant and am not moaning, as I should not have been cutting the corner that much, but was a bit scary. I am sure people must have come short there.

Please no - sachets should NEVER be handed out at road races to cyclists on the fly.  I was taken out at 50kph a couple of years ago at ride for sight because of this practice, as someone tried to move across a fast moving bunch to grab one in front of me.

I agree. If you want water, you should have to stop. The people manning the water points should not try pass to moving cyclists. It works for running, but for cycling the speeds are too high.

So can none of you offer advice on registering at road racea in gauteng on the day? obv not the 94.7 but others? it was the norm in CT but the people i lifted with to bestmed found it amusing that i thought it even possible here. Maybe just a PPA thing?

I HATE having to take time off work to trek all the way out to fourways to pick up my number. It's ridiculous. I would rather wake up an hour earlier and get to the venue much earlier and pick up my number. Like you say if it's done in cape town why not up here.

I'm not lucky enough to be able to just leave work. I have to take a half days leave. I usually end up asking friends and then I return the favour by taking leave for one of the races.

Fortunately I work for myself, so it is easy to take time off to register. Bruce Reyneke also isn't to far for me to travel.

For R4V I had to travel to Fourways to register and that took a hour and a half out of my day, which is a lot.

I honestly can't understand why you can not register the morning prior to a race. I myself would make every effort to register prior to that, but sometimes it just isn't possible.

I know the queue's will be ridiculous the morning of the race, but then just leave early enough.

Perhaps there is a valid reason why it can't be done. Maybe ASG can explain the logistical challenges regarding to this.

Surely licensed riders should be able to use a CSA issued number for the season? I can understand that this would be more complicated for non-licensed riders

I guess the only issue that may arise is how to stop non-registered riders from just arriving at races with their existing number.

Yeah I'm sure you would have a lot of non registered guys "racing" and that could get messy.

A "personalised" number would be a good idea for licensed riders. I wonder how it would work with me though as you know I sometimes hang on with the vets and sometimes mix it up on a tandem.

They should go and have a meeting with SASeeding on how to run things. I received my number when I started mountainbiking in 2011. For each race you get a different colour sticker and a batch sticker to stick on your plastic board. Yes the plastic board will not work for the roadies, but there should be a very simple solution to this.

The need to race each race with a new number is stupid.

How do you get this sticker?

Either at a registration day, or the morning of the race. But they usually have 3 days for registration, and are available from very early on race day itself.

But MTB'ers are honest people. They wont jump batches so lots of guys dont even bother to fetch the sticker...

Ok cool, so you still need to go to a venue. Think the guys want a solution that avoids that.

Early on race day is a good 2nd place its seems from comments above though.

I've always done the, on-the-day option for MTB. All batching info has been sent out, as with the BSC and other road races.

You pitch up, state your name, surname or race number (the SASeeding/ROAG one) and you get your pack with batch sticker, cable ties of the board and the sponsors sticker for the top of your board.

As for road bike numbering. Why not do it like the tri-athletes or world tour riders and get a setup that holds the number on your seat post?
