Stumpmeister Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 I have a Anthem Advance Carbon, only issue I have is the lack of a rear remote lockout. This became a big issue for me the faster I got because I only have so many fingers I can loose trying to flip the switch down there. A Fox remote shock is 8k and they dont want you to put a Rock Shox in, there is no other solution but to either pay 8k or tie a piece of string to the shock. Camper rear shock might work better because of where the shock is and how you can work it.
raptor-22 Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 Thanks Nico, seen that ad but I'm looking for a 29er. Been told that's the way to go. Appreciate all the advice everyone.A few weeks ago I stepped out of a store in Berkley. I was just browsing but the prices were staggeringly low compared to home so I was tempted. I asked why so few 29ers on the floor and he chuckled and said "only guys looking for those now are xc racers and people who are just getting into the game. " I was surprised because the USA is supposed to be 29 territory. Nope he said, trail bikes are where the sales are. They sell more 650b giants than 29ers and they even have requests for high end hardtails in 650b. He said, when you see Cannondale and specialized getting into 650b trail bikes the way they are then it's a serious matter. They still sell 29ers but it's 1:2. I think sa is still hung up on 29 ers but we sell less bikes in a year than giant produces in a month (or thereabouts). Don't get too hung up on the wheel size. If the info given is correct then surely you'd rather want to buy the best bike for you rather than limit yourself to a wheelsize?

nonky Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 Honestly can't tell you, but when I bought my Camber in mid 2014, the Comp Carbon was retailing for a tad over R30k. If the price you got is right, then there has been a massive price increase. For your budget, there are a hell of a lot of bikes to consider. Also look at bikes from Silverback, Pyga, On-One and so on. The Spez is a fantastic bike, but you've got a nice budget to play around with, so take your time and and don't rush into a purchase. 2014 camber comp carbon was ZAR40k when I bought2015 was ZAR44k, I think2016 will be a HELLUVA lot more...

mjacres Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 I think if you are going to go for one of the 29ers mentioned origionally I'd be more tempted to go for the Anthem. Mainly because of the specs. FOX Factory vs Evolution is a no brainer. They are miles apart. If you want 120mm up front then can get quite a lot more $$ for the Factory. The Anthem is full XT. Totally worth it. And slap a dropper on whichever one you decide. Or get a Trance
Monark Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 I agree with mjacres, the 2015 Anthem Spec is great for the price. The frame is stiff, drive train is bulletproof and the suspension is fantastic. Its a no brainer.
rudi-h Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 Hi, I am fairly new to biking, and, after a lot of research, I think I've narrowed my choices to the Giant Anthem Advanced 29er (R41k - 2015 model) or the Spez Camber Comp Carbon 29er (R41k - 2015 model) i.e. both are the same price. I have also been quoted R47k for the Spez Epic Comp Carbon 29er. I'd be interested to hear from the members which bike they feel offers better rideability and value for money. After reading numerous posts, I know that a lot has to do with personal preference so I plan on riding both, if possible, before purchase. Cheerio. it depends on your goals. if you just want to ride your bike on weekends on smooth trails / dirt roads, get the bike that you like most. I call that category A If you look at a danny mckaskill or chris akrigg video thinking "Damn that's awesome, wish I could do that!", then you are in category B. Category B means you need to get something with a slack geometry. Camber is okay, but preferrably a stumpy, trance or something 130mm+. Its almost impossible to learn to ride a bike properly with the forward geometry of a marathon bike. Also, go for a few lessons to learn how to bunny hop etc. properly (with flats) when you start out. That little skill by itself will mean that within the first few months you will ride circles around some of the seasoned racers when the going gets rough.
Johny Bravo Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 2016 Carbon Comp = R55K got price todayThat is crazy. I would never even think about that, when there is a S- Works Stumpjumper fsr in the classifieds for R45k. Absolutely mint condition.

And Deore brakes, damn those brakes come on R7000 HT 29ers ... Seems like one pays a bit for the badge ... j/k

Seems that all the R&D costs that went into Spez's "Trail Chassis" has been passed straight onto the consumer. The weak Rand also isn't helping. Does anyone have a spec list for the Comp Carbon?
