Sorry to hear about that Andrew. All the best with the recovery.

I went to a lyno specialist and got sorted pretty well. My problems with my calf was related to them being overly stretched, plus some other weaknesses/imbalances. So I had to stretch my glutes, esp one as well as my hip flexors. Further to that, exercises to strengthen the calf.

Touch wood, I am still feeling it at times, but it is much much better.

Seem to also have settled into a road shoe (make) which fits my feet quite well, so maybe that consistency helps.

Oh, and I no longer run in high drop shoes. Max 8mm, mostly 4. (One trail shoe is at 6 and one at 0 drop.) Anything higher just seems to mess with me. But that is a very personal thing.

Ja okes, I know

I'm going to Thailand early next week for a late honeymoon... (so you don't have to feel too bad for me) Will hit the bio work hard, yoga my ass off and what not for the next two and a half weeks till I get back. Maybe some long walks on the beach too for a bit of extra easy strengthening. Hopefully I'll be able to ease back into the running on my return and still build up towards Soweto... really want to tick off a marathon this year already

Have a lekker weekend okes, train smart

My calf troubles are back again... felt a light strain towards the end of my run last week, rested it for a week, been doing lots of stretching, rolling, strengthening work. Hadn't felt it at all since Monday, then Weds I went off for a trot and didn't even make it a km and it was flaring up something special... walked home

Kids have murdered my medical savings, so going to hit physio after payday, but it's really becoming a huge frustration. I've really been trying to do the right things this time round but this bloody calf of mine is permanently stuffing me around. Even my placebo compression socks aren't doing the job anymore. Crikey, I've even started doing a bit of Yoga

Any thoughts? My physio has always commented on the large amount of scar tissue on my right calf in particular... I've had two bad tears in the past, not quite surgery level, but not far off. I think they called them grade 2 tears.

I'm doing pretty much everything I can think of to get around this and move on with my training... has anyone though got any other ideas? I don't care how left field they are

Sincerely

Desperate.

Lots of good information in this thread

Sorry to hear about your calf

Maybe lay off the strengthen exercises and also watch out for the beach walks... Sounds like your calf needs more recovery not exercise.

Maybe try a small heel riser in your running and walking shoes on the side of the sore calf as a temporary measure about 3-5mm height

Sorry to hear that bud. especially with Soweto only 6 weeks away.

If it make you feel any better, yesterday i too had to stop turn around and limp home after a few 100 meters. mine is my left knee for some reason. stressing balls for my 1st marathon now.

Truly hope something magical happens and you are back to running ways again .

What type of sore? Dull pain or sharp pain? If its dull and not stride affecting then that's your knees adapting to the pounding. Slow warm up and spray some water on them during your run. Also so some hammy and quad stretches before and after your run. It will go away eventually. If it's sharp pain then where is it? Inside of the leg is runners knee and outside is itb...both those go away with strength exercise. A biokinetikist will help with that

Well marafun entry paid and registered today.... just over a month to go.

What do u chaps pay for a marathon nowdays?

I paid Chf 120...(+/- R1650.00...yes sixteen hundred rond not a typo)

Could have saved 20 swissies if i entered earlier but did not want to commit until i was sure.

EDIT: Not that i'm entirely sure its a good idea tbh :w00t:

It includes timing chip for race day, T shirt, medal and decently stocked water points powerbar / isostar

2 lap course

Marathon with medal timing chip and shirt is anything from 150 to 250. 2 oceans ultra is about 450. All pretty much coke and powerade and water and some sweeties the chocs

Bargain...altho back in the day i think we woulda gone on strike and burned a few stadiums if we had to pay over 100...

I have been to the bio before and he said i have knee cap tracking issues. Been doing exercises accordingly to sort that out and it worked.

This knee pain is in the front below my knee cap almost where my shin joins. no discomfort while walking though. Went for a jog this morning for the first time in a week when the pain started, 2km in i had to walk briefly and turn around , jogged again and once home pushed through the pain as it had died down and turned the run into a 6km run although at a slow 7min/km. walked the last 100m home though because of the pain.

I normally train at a comfortable 6min/km and have a pb for HM at 1:52:40. Since I moved here the route is so flat and i was running then comfortably (HR wise) at 5:00 - 5:30 min/km. Do you think it might be this that caused the pain? although its only one knee and not both.

not sure...you may be increasing your stride? maybe focus on a smaller stride

That and cadence was the 1st thing i checked compared to my usual old route

Old Route at slower speed

New and slightly fast speed

Ag well, just hope it goes away quickly, else i will scrap Soweto Marathon as my qualifier and just do the HM then aim at Johnson as my qualifier but then i am in the new year unfortunately.
