Ferret69 Posted February 28, 2017 Posted February 28, 2017 Howdy gents and ladies, I have trouble chewing and running at the same time, I need my mouth to breathe, however, if the food I take in is fairly liquid, no problem. I also have a deep rooted dislike of USN and Goo sachets and even if I stow them in my water belt pocket, they always leach and I end up with sticky hands. I was hoping we could come up with a reusable, not too bulky suggestion for race fuel in volumes less than a water bottle. I obviously need this only for my training runs, which I conduct mostly alone. I'm doing a 25km training run the weekend, so will need at least the volume equivalent of 3 Goo's. Thanks for your input! I personally Like the PowerBar Gels... Better tasting, not as Gooey, and a double re-sealable opening so you can take small sips and run with them for a while without them leaking I would generally drip feed one sachet with water over 3 -4 water points so would last me a good 10-15km per gel in the 2nd half of Comrades.. Apple and Black current ones have the caffeine so those are best IMHO. Lexx and EmJayZA 2

Too much sweet stuff makes me nauseous

Too much sweet stuff makes me nauseousI also don't like gels... someone suggested I must give it a try to see if it helps with my nausea. I eat one racefood every hour, that is 30g of carbs every hour. I will give Hammer gels a try on Sunday. At Comrades, I would eat potatoes when I see a potato waterpoint. Seems to work well for me, rather than sweets. Lexx 1

I am actually using a coach for the first time, but I decided I am going to keep on doing what worked for me in my previous Comrades Marathons. He send me my March Program, and still the km's is less than what I am use to, and there are no hill work included. I mean, this is a up-run, I need to do lots and lots and lots of hills. March and April is big Mileage months, and still the program says run 1h on Weekdays. I mean for R500 pm, I would expect a decent program. rant off...

I've run my 4 on 900/1100/1300 and 2100 and they were Bronze 9h09/ BR 8h46/ BR 8h03 and Silver 7h01 I have some Mates looking for silver this year that have already gone past 1200kms and are heading close to 3000km come race day... but that's just madness in my opinion Lexx 1

They are either super fit or over trained come race day.
Ferret69 Posted February 28, 2017 Posted February 28, 2017 Jeez 3000km come race day. They are either super fit or over trained come race day. Both.. but I would go with the Latter One has just started with a new coach and the mileage is insane... 45km + run every weekend since mid Jan so far and he has already run 3 x Sub3 marathons this year.. No Chance I could cope with that kind of Mileage and pace... I didn't even do 1 sub3h15 marathon in my lead up to silver last year.. 3 marathons and 1 ultra all at Training pace.. Sep-Nov are the Months to RACE a Marathon... again in my opinion. Hacc, Lexx and ScottCM 3

I also just run easy pace on my long runs. Would much rather have that hours In my legs. Hacc 1
Jackes Posted February 28, 2017 Posted February 28, 2017 Sep-Nov are the Months to RACE a Marathon... again in my opinion. Lindsay's opinion as well! wow, How does your body cope with running 45km every weekend. Plus speed work during the week. Easy, do it full time... hahaGift Kelehe is currently coached by John Hamlett and their team has recently bagged Gold at the World Ultra Marathon 100km Championships Race held in Spain, in November 2016 and their team consisting of 5 ultra running legends from South Africa achieved First Place in that 100km event. His current training consists of running 170km weekly and pushes that up to 270km from April until race day in June. Ferret69 Posted February 28, 2017 Posted February 28, 2017 45km every weekend? Sjoe. That's mental. That's just Sunday's run, they still doing around 25 on the Saturday to finish up with 160k+ weeks..
