I'll keep and eye out for a tall guy (aka Stretch) finishing at that time. Will probably still be around watching other club mates finish!

3rd and last OMTOM ultra for me. My plan is to run with my wife up to Houtbay Cemetery (42km) and then push on through from there. Hoping for 5:00-5:15.

Lekka! I'll cheer the chap running next to the tall guy then too!

Out of curiosity, why are you calling this your last?

im doing my first OMTOM ultra..looking forward to it

You are going to enjoy it! It is my favorite ultra, I would definitely do 10 without blinking an eye.

The support is as great as Comrades. Lots of bands and thousands of people supporting.

My tips for OMTOM:

1. Get there early (at least 1.5 hours before the time), parking and traffic is a disaster. Try and get a parking ticket.( I think they are still available at the expo)

2. The first 28km is quite flat and you struggle to hold back. You need to force yourself to do this as the race starts at 28km at the bottom of Chappies. Keep something in the tank for Constantia Nek and the last kilometer.

3. Start with a long-sleeve shirt - even at 6:30 it is quite cold and I started in rain in 2015 and 2016.

4. Look out for the cat eyes. I fell last year after everyone warned me... I also saw at least 3 people that fell coming down Chappies.

5. Take extra water sachets at the bottom of Chappies, they run out of water quite quickly up Chapmans Peak as there is not really access for trucks/ bakkies to drop off more fluids.

6. Enjoy it!!! We have a beautiful country with beautiful people, so take it all in while running up Chapmans Peak.

Good luck!!

Sub 5 is an excellent time for OMTOM. On my bucket list... not for this year but one day...

Probably last. Physically: my body (read knees) are just really suffering too much these days on tar. Mentally: I had enough of the large crowds and just the logistics of getting to start with all the people and all the cars at road races. Also, since I'm from Gauteng it is getting very expensive to go down each year. I will concentrate more on trail running after OMTOM - it is a bit easier on my ageing body.

Me and my wife will be in Irene colours...

Nothing wrong with Myprodols in moderation. Take one just before you startt and another about ten minutes before chappies

This was the advice given to her,  I just wanted more opinions as I under normal conditions would'nt even consider it.  Thanks

Ja, these club shorts are seriously pseudo hot pants! Used mine once and even though they're so short, had them climb all up in the sweet spot!

I've had to go hunting for some substitute shorts that are the same club colour and slightly closer to boardie length, I'll be more comfy in. Found a decent pair of nike football shorts that work. Did a test run in them last week and they're good to go!

(Wonder how Patch would handle this issue given his sock length fetish...)

Those are some short shorts Stretch! Evan would be proud.... :whistling:

Stretch should go over to those Pollyshort of old. My wife hated it when I used to run in them, because it left nothing to the imagination. Lol

you cant damage the ITB..but the pain is a result of it rubbing against the knee...which will affect her gait and cause possible muscle damage elsewhere. If she can pull through the pain then fine..but I have been struck by that pain before and its not nice.

Nooooooooooo  :o

It's a huge risk... the year of my first Comrades (that hot one from hell) they had 30 runners admitted to ICU, something like 90% of them had taken Myprodol.

This is an extreme case, but a good example: https://www.modernathlete.co.za/stories/the-myprodol-man

Colin Moss also had the brainfart to take at the Epic long ago, ended up with renal failure... and he is a doctor. He himself says he doesn't know what he was thinking. I can't find the story, but it's out there somewhere.

Many of us can get away with 1 or 2 towards the end of an event (if you are sure you're not dehydrated), but you could also be the guy that ends up in ICU or worse. The general rule (V12 will re-affirm this too I think), if you need to take an NSAID to start an event, you should not be doing the event.

There are also better options than Myprodol if you must go that route...

Also pretty certain Comrades sent out an email last year warning people against using NSAIDS?

Anyways, it's each persons call, lots of runners do use them, but you should really consider things before popping that little smartie

This is what it would be if it happens, no more than two on the day.

What is the better options?
