I need 3.5km to make it 1000km for the year - so I will do that this afternoon. Then I will taper, rest and carboload for the rest of the week...

That's amazing, I don't think I've run 1000km's in the last 4 years, let alone 4 months!

It sounds like alot, but almost 100km of that was over one weekend (African X). My wife and I trained for a trail run last year May. We were also entered for a trail run in August last year. So we started our training for the May trail run in March last year and just didn't stop. So it was relatively easy to just increase mileage in Jan.

Quick question for the Comrades experts.

Reading how everyone doesn't intend on running this week makes me question myself. Seeing my goal is not OMTOM, but Comrades, I planned to still do my regular sessions until Wednesday and then a very light warmup on Friday. This on the back of fairly generous LSD runs on the weekend behind me.

I do not care too much for a stellar time at Oceans, but just want to run the required pace for Comrades.

Am I making a rookie mistake by being too aggressive?

I wouldn't call myself an expert. I think I am far from it. Like you said your goal is to run OMTOM at your "Comrades" pace. What is your pace going to be?

Out of personal experience I would rest/ take it easy this week. You could end up with tired legs at Two Oceans ( you only feel it from 40km onwards) and it will make you doubt yourself and that you will be able to run Comrades at any pace.

If you do rest, and you run OMTOM at your goal pace it will boost your self-confidence and training for Comrades. Don't set yourself up for failure. 56km is far. Just my 2c...

don't do speed work or hill work...just do slow regeneration runs.

how intense has your weeks before been? if they have been 90+ weeks then you are gonna have tired legs and could possibly give yourself an injury and trust me there is nothing worse than an injury at this time. with 2 runs you still gonna get a solid 80km week and that will give you two solid days rest

Thanks - this does make a lot of sense. I probably need that more than the sessions I will miss.

Thanks - I will rather do the two lighter runs as you suggested. I have been feeling the high mileage since the beginning of March getting the better of me. Most weeks has been 80-90k and to me that is a lot. And as Hacc pointed out being cautious also has other benefits.

Unfortunately not for me. My introvert personality and crowds don't mingle so lekker..

Did a trail run last year where there were only 58 entries. It was perfect!

Ja me to, can't think of anything worse than trying to run in that kind of crowd.

bliksem, a 20km week for me is a lot, in fact, I am not even at 80-90km per month. well done to you guys for doing crazy km's like that on a frequent basis. good luck with oceans for all competing.

Join my club, it's the max30km/week club

If you hit 30 km or more in one week alarm bells go off and you get a warning letter....

While I'm envious of the ultra marathon vibe I also enjoy pottering along just keeping fit and healthy with no niggles.... or no serious niggles ????

Speaking of niggles... have a bit of a calf niggle since Saturday... went skateboarding for the first time in many years... it's tough on your legs, even just 20 minutes

So jealous right now. Will def run the OMTOM again.

Such a beautiful race. I love the supporters and all the bands. I would definitely recommend it to anyone that wants to run Comrades to first run Two Oceans.

I think the nerves are starting up yes, our first omtom...

What makes it worse is I am a bit loss about the strategy.

Being our first, knowing I must not go out to hard (going out to hard breaks my wife especially), but not knowing how much I have to provide for that loaded second half, but then also not knowing what my wife's itb is going to do, especially on the downhills.   So if we lose time on the ups and downs, then we're screwed, how do you build a pacing strategy with that...    lol

I guess go out as slow as I know we need to and see what the day and the second half throw at us and take it as it comes, without not knowing what awaits around the next corner.

We are VERY much looking forward to it though!

It looks like a nice, not too windy, hottish day is awaiting us on the back of a cold front this week.   Hopefully there will still be some of the cold around.

That's serious mileage, I am on 437 km. Are you sure you need to run so much?

Don't overthink your strategy. Just enjoy your first Two Oceans. Take it easy the first 28km to save energy for the second half. Take the second half as it comes (especially the downhill after Constantia Nek). Luckily there are lots of support on the road to motivate you.

I am hoping for cooler weather, but I have experienced all 4 seasons in one day at OMTOM. Just like Argus, you don't know what to expect.

Getting very excited now!!
