Best Race of the Year... Cant Wait

Awesome, I will be the one in the Nedbank LVCC Running Kit  ... Was hoping for a PB, but this F@#$%^ Cold that I picked up, will maybe just taking it easy.

Thanks, will go have a look.

Training is coming on slowly, but surely. Picking up the miles slowly and constantly. The ITB is holding off good too.

Went to the orthopedist on recommendation and he recons my running style also creates my ITB. That and the "crap" Nikes I run with. Quickly became used to hearing how crap Nikes are this last few weeks.... :whistling:

That's why I have to choose now between the Mizuno Wave Rider 19, New Balance 880v6 and Brooks Glycerin 14. Although the brooks feel the most comfortable and a bit softer, they don't give me that warm feeling (Don't like the looks and price as well).

That leaves the New Balance and Mizuno then I guess. The NB feeling the bit softer than the Mizuno, the more "stable" as well.

It feels as if the Mizuno's make me supinate, I don't feel so stable on them, standing and walking, but they are the ones the orthopedist advises. Real confused.

If you are in the jhb area, go to sbr sport and let Mike record you while you run. I did the leg assessment after doing 450km on my new balance 1080 v5 only to find out the reason I get such bad knee pains are that the soles are so soft they give way on foot strike and my leg caves inwards. He put me on asics nimbus 18 and filmed a second time and brooks ghost 8 and filmed a 3rd time. Both asics and brooks were perfectly neutral strike and held up brilliantly. I now have 30km on the Asics and no pains at all. Definitely worth it

Unfortunately I never really go to Jhb.  I also did not like my pair of Cumulus I had AT ALL.   Not sure if the Nimbus would be that different.

I just know that I have never been this frustrated with choice of shoes ever.   I always walked into a shop, picked the latest Pegusas en went.  :cursing:

BTW, the Brooks Ghost 9 was perfect, really liked them, untill I jogged lightly in them.  The top of my toe hits the hard toe cap in a weird uncomfortable manner and I'm not sure that is such a good idea.   So it was a real downer as I really liked them, not sure why they would make such a big hard toe cap at all.

PS:  The lady at SBR Sport recons New Balance is a bad shoe.   So many people so many opinions I guess...

getting back into things again Scott....plan is still on for the South Coast Marathon in October

That's great news. Give us a race report of the event as i would love to hear how it is, bummed i can't do it this year but hopefully next year.

I see most of your runs are low 5min runs. Is that your "easy" pace? I remember you once said you ran hard every time you trained and just wondering if your approach has changed.

slightly...While I get back my fitness I have been trying to keep my heart rate in threshold and lower..so If I see I am going into maximum I slow down a bit. although my run yesterday I spend more time in max than threshold...but I think that was largely because I had to run up a series of mother hills.

On the whole though I am trying more of a heart rate based approach to training this year - except for when I do intervals

Stretch just has very long legs... his walking pace is 6min/km

Getting back into my running this evening officially... been ticking over through winter with the odd 10km, and doing a fair bit of cross training, but time to get some miles under the belt as I'm really keen to get on top of the Comrades training early. Wife is also going nicely, she did our club run 21km on Sun (her first solo 21km) and is very regular with her midweek runs as I make a point to look after the kids. Will be doing the Wanderers 21km later this month and then building up towards the Kaapsehoop marathon and the Tough one later this year.

Another big plus is I've made some changes on the diet front which is reaping rewards - from the start of the year I am down nearly 7kgs, 4 of those kgs in the last month having dropped sugar pretty much completely (in my tea and coffee and no cool drinks, sweets, chocs etc) and bread from my diet - I would klap at least one sarmie a day. I keep the carbs low in general too, but particularly in the evenings. Sitting around 88.5kgs with my 34" jeans sitting pretty loose, and looking to ultimately get down to around 83kgs, which would I guess put me around 12-14% body fat. Any skinnier than that and I will take a proper hiding in the waterpolo pool

Man, I used to love chips... and could eat them without putting on weight no problem, getting older though - that has changed.

Been surprised at how easy it's been to drop the junk though, once you've gotten off that craving train though it's really quite easy...

Will re-align my dieting a little once I am down where I want to be - I certainly don't plan on never eating the fun stuff again, but I do need to keep it in check long term.

Oh to be a kid again

I try drink minimal cool drink and don't eat chips anymore at all. I have also replaced my Sugar with canderel in my tea / coffee and honey in my cereal. Cut most of the fat off my food too. However the scale this morning said that my daily intake of 3 chocolates and ice cream at night out weight my sacrifices made so far, so will have to start cutting those out too  <_<
