SwissVan Posted October 19, 2016 Posted October 19, 2016 Question: For those who use a smart watch.... i.e. Gps How accurate do you find your watch distance compared to actual race distances? In particular for major events where the race course can be taken to be accurate, not the local church fun distance ???? Im hoping my polar is under cutting / measuring shortSadly I doubt it....

In particular for major events where the race course can be taken to be accurate, not the local church fun distance Im hoping my polar is under cutting / measuring shortSadly I doubt it.... GPS watches in a race environment generally over measure because of the weaving you take. Last year's maritzburg marathon mine measured 43.1 and that was measured correctly with a jones counter. Sundays measurement on my watch showed exactly 42.2, but it was a straight up and down course so there was no deviation and very few corners to add distance Lexx 1

My watch has been very accurate
ScottCM Posted October 19, 2016 Author Posted October 19, 2016 (edited) At price we pay for the watches they have to be accurate. Don't think Garmin, Polar would exist if it was constantly off by even 10% and still charging the same price for a unit. Edited October 19, 2016 by ScottC-M Lexx 1
Stretch Posted October 19, 2016 Posted October 19, 2016 there is a great article here http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2009/03/racing-line-understanding-how-courses.html
Tubehunter Posted October 19, 2016 Posted October 19, 2016 (edited) OK, I'll come out and say it. I've made my peace that Comrades is possibly too much of a commitment to training to get my knee prepped for doing that kind of distance! Think I'll be sticking to a half and shorter from this point as my knees just hate when I start adding real mileage! (That then affects the surfing and if I really have to choose, the surfing always wins!) I'll tip my hat to you chaps who are able to do the distance! My FIL (****it list, as opposed to a bucket list...) has far too many surfing related items to check, to invest the necessary sacrifices to get a Comrades ticked off too. So, now the challenge becomes to do a 5K in under 20 minutes. Need to shave 2 minutes off my PB to get there. Speedwork here I come! Hopefully get a OMTOM half entry through the ballot setup and aim to run a half PB there. Did Gun Run this past weekend and although I ran a 1:55 PB, I spectacularly dropped off the pace after the knees were tender and nursed myself home. Going through the first 13kays I was on a 1:45ish pace. I gotta admit that I get so surprised at the size and shape of some of the people who run fast times! Looking at them, you would not think they are good for doing the mileage at the pace they do and yet they just keep motoring along! Very impressive to see! Anyway, just huge kudos to all you guys that will keep pushing through to the Comrades! Massive respect to you just for having the grit to keep going through the training et al!
