ScottCM Posted November 22, 2016 Author Posted November 22, 2016 If anyone is interested in the Attakwas Extreme Trail, we're running a competition to win entries on Trail Hub here: http://www.trailhub.co.za/c/_/a/articles/competitions/giveaway-win-one-of-two-entries-to-the-attakwas-trail-extreme-r202 A shameless hijack (I know) but there needs to be some sort of tax for allowing this thread to go on for so long Ever think of making it the Running hub to cater for road & trail runners alike? Surely will bring in more members than an exclusive trail running page does, or is that exclusivity the desired design? Nick 1
ScottCM Posted November 22, 2016 Author Posted November 22, 2016 So after getting patellar tendinitis and going to the bio 3 times a week for the past 8 weeks and i finally had a 2.8km run this morning which wasn't stopped by pain. I did however have to take it very slow and ran on as much grass sidewalks as i could find but it was amazing being out there again. I'm slightly aware of the knee but not in pain. will give it a day or two of rest then do another 2.8km run, starting a 2 times a week then increase to 3 times a week then 4 times a week. knee permitting i will then start slowly increasing mileage. GemmerKat Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Bought some proper running shoes after an assessment at SBR Sport in Sunninghill. Very nice guy. Tested out the new shoes with a lekker 5 km time trail this afternoon. Think I am ready to balance out my cycling with some long distance running. Told myself I want to do the comrades in 2018. Think it is too late to prepare for 2017. Done a couple of 5 and 10 km runs but anything behind 10 km is new territory. I know one needs to build up the distance gradually.
ScottCM Posted November 23, 2016 Author Posted November 23, 2016 Excellent Scott! Don't cave to the temptation to go harder or longer yet dude! That my friend is one of my biggest flaws, i was last in the queue when the almighty was handing out patience..... Bought some proper running shoes after an assessment at SBR Sport in Sunninghill. I know one needs to build up the distance gradually. Mike at SBR Sport is really good and many of us here use him. If you can already do a 10km run then 2017 isn't totally out of the question provided everything goes right for you. HOWEVER for pleasure purposes sticking to 2018 would be much more wiser as it gives you time to slowly build up to long distances and when injuries occur it gives you time to take off and let them heal properly. Good luck with the training and remember to build up gradually, and most of all enjoy it!!! PS : Don't be surprised if your bike collects dust, before my injury i have ridden a whole 17km since November last year and many of us here boast similar low mileage figures. GemmerKat 1

I think 2018 will be better (and it is a down run). Start building up the kilometers gradually. Concentrate on running a good time on a 10, then 21, 32 (there are not many 32km races around) and then the very daunting 42km. I have heard from my running club mates that some people take 2 years to prepare for their first Comrades. I didn't do this and if I can do it over, I will not jump into the deep end again. No idea what you're talking about... I ran 1000k's more than I rode this entire year! That includes the beginning of the year, when I still actually rode. And actually took the MTB for a spin the last 3 weekends, just to save the legs a bit with some cross-training. ScottCM 1
Mudsimus Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 I haven't touch my bike since I started running. When you are pressed for time then an hour run is much more beneficial than the same time pedaling. Im still contemplating Comrades 2017, biggest issue is finding time to do longer distances. Will see how December and Jan goes. The dream is actually Sky Run, but it seems a step to far at the moment.

I only touch my bike from July to November (after Comrades). I normally run during the week. Like you said 1 hour of running is better than 1 hour of cycling. I think a ride should not be less than 2 hours and I don't have the time during the week. (and I would rather go for a run than sit in a spinning class...) I cycle over weekends, but I do struggle to do a long run and cycle the same weekend.

Stretch Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 yup...i enjoy some good singletrack still...but..the schlep of getting everything ready...blah blah...its easier to just whip on some shoes and go run...basically ride from June to September only now ScottCM 1
Tubehunter Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 Haven't been on my bike in 5 months.... Was averaging 250kms plus a week on the bike before then with roughly 2 runs a week around that. Like others have mentioned, it became a time thing for me since May. I'm doing a post grad until July next year and the youngest of my two daughters has decided she would rather live with me full time, so the combo of the two changes have meant that there just is not 2 spare hours in the morning or afternoon to fit in a proper 50kay ride during the week, whilst a hard 35 - 45 min run is an option with something longer on the weekend! (Especially when the surf is not firing!) I dropped off my DC team 4 months ago when I noticed it is just not viable from a schedule perspective and the goal they are chasing after! I have even deliberately not entered the Argus for next year, after 11 consecutive rides with 5 others from previous years, so it would've been my 17th if I rode next year, but know myself well enough that if I entered I would've wanted to train really hard for it! Busy getting my jollies off doing a few running races during this stage and enjoying the change of scenery! Beesrib, Stretch, Andrew Steer and 2 others 5
