Sugar Free

I don't know why everyone says it is difficult to cut out sugar because so many foods have hidden sugar in them. Real food cooked from scratch has no hidden sugar.

I agree the temptation of sweet things is hard to resist, but that is a different issue.

Ok boys and girls...be prepared for a lecture.  :whistling:

After about 2 weeks of being TOTALLY sugar and sweetener free, a weird thing starts happening.

Bare in mind that i avoid anything that tastes sweet. Even artificially sweetened products.

After the 2 weeks, your palate adjusts and you start noticing amazing flavours that are not sweet related. So where before you had sour, salty, bitter and sweet. Now sour, salty and bitter things start tasting better and more pleasing to the palate. You begin to notice that within these three categories lie an infinite number of flavour profiles.

It seems to me that you fine folks are trying to replace the sweetness that you have become accustomed to using other means, i challenge you to drop the word "sweet" from your vocabulary for 1 month and then decide if you even need "sweet" in your life.

That's what I want to do. Sadly, when I see things like Bacon Jam (which is the only type of jam I've had in I think 4 months) then all bets are off.

Having said that - I accept that challenge.

Good Man.

Cap, we share recipes often, so please believe me when i tell you, that once you avoid the "sweet" taste, and allow your palate to adjust, your kitchen is going to produce some truly wonderful things.

Just be careful of Aspartame (artificial sweetner) in suger-free products, the jury is out as to whether its any better for you than sugar. Google it and read some horror stories as well

Sorry dude.

But incorrect.

Fructose is actually 50% sucrose and 50% glucose.

Actually, no. LMGTFY:

"Sucrose is a disaccharide sugar comprised of fructose and glucose in a 1:1 ratio. It's perhaps the most familiar of the sugars, since sucrose is also known as table sugar."

It's the fructose that is bad for you, except during or just after a ride (yay!) and except when it is eaten in the presence of natural fibres e.g. in raw fruit.

Read Dr. Robert Lustig (Fat Chance: The Hidden Truth About Sugar).

you would think so, but i genuinely feel much better eating like this.

When i first started, i was always cranky and hungry. but as i adjusted and my stomach shrank back to what it should, this actually satiates me completely.

you dont even want to know how much food i used to eat....

Hey Wayne & other posters. Many thanks for this thread!

Perfect timing as I've started the no sugar/no bread diet as of today...... and now have added motivation.

One question; is honey allowed?
