So chuffed the wide range now works 100% with the Rapide 16 and the E-Thirteen 42   .... well tested at Thaba. Now the question is was it the bike or was I just having a good day

Looking for some advice:

What do you think is the better option:

1 - Rapide cog extender on a xt cassette (with a 16t as well) - 11-40/42

2 - Praxis 11-40 wide range cassette.

I've got a standard 11-36 xt cassette (still in the box), so trying to decide which option to go for...

Since you have a brand new 11-36 prolly cheaper to convert..... or sell your new cassette and upgrade to the Praxis.

I converted a 11-36 that already had one chain through it as a 2x10. Works ok and still riding it 8 months later on chain 2.

With the 11-36 you can easily convert back but the Praxis option not this flexible unless you have a long cage RD

I also just went 1 x 9, 11 - 34 and 30 up front (Raceface 30t). I live in Mpumalanga - lots and lots of climbing! Hence the 30. So far so good. Once this drive train is due for replacement, I'll take a look at this Praxis thing you guys speak of.

Have a look at www.kitted.co.za for South African made chain rings.

Locally designed and made. I supported the local guys and Im really impressed with the quality of the products. Bought a 32T to start with in February this year, and recently bought a 34T NW chainring. Give them a try. They've got some nice products

I've been considering going 1 x 10 with Praxxis for a while now, but after working out my top speed and gear ratios, I will be on my 3x10 until it blows and then make a plan.  I do use my big ring and top speed quite often, so have kept it as part of the considerations.

I very very seldom use granny, maybe two rides a year - so will leave it out of the equation for now.

If you hypothetically pedal 90rpm, basics are like this:

Current setup: 42/32 F and 11/34 R

42/11 44.4km/h and 3.82 ratio

32/34 10.9km/h and 0.94 ratio

If I went 1 x 10, the closest would be a 36 up front on a praxxis 11/40

36/40 10.5km/h and 0.90 ratio Close as dammit and a little bit easier - so that's cool.

36/11 38km/h and 3.27 ratio  - this is the deal breaker at this time, I need to pedal at 105 rpm cadence to reach the 44.4km/h that I would do on the 42/11, an increase of 15 rpm is 13%, which in my layman's english, will kill me 13% faster whilst looking like roadrunner for my legs to try and keep up.

10/40 would be closer to the WIN, but since that's not available, I've decided to just keep it as is at the moment.

1x10 or 1 x 11 isn't meant to just be the best at everything, covering all the bases.  It is a lower maintenance, cleaner bars, lower cost, less-chance-of-fault, lower weight, better looking alternative to the 2x or 3x setups, and I will be looking at it sometime.  But it is not without faults - if you often go big blade and top speed, or need a granny for where you ride - stick with what is proven to work in those situations.

Must be a closet roadie...

Seriously though, its not for everyone as has been said earlier in this thread, very much depends on the type of riding you do and of course who you are riding with.

On my local rides I seldom need to top end, only really on the way back home but I'm normally buggered by then anyway.

haha, come on man, that's insulting my character there.

I've once, many years ago, ridden a friend's fixie though, with a brandy and coke in my hand, went over the bars and somehow managed to keep the drink in tact, more than I can say for my dignity... closest I've been to a roadbike.

And so, my drivetrain is pretty much kaput and after W2W and dropping my chain many many times, I've just taken the plunge.  10minutes ago I ordered my Kalbo 1 x 10 conversion kit.  36t front, 11-40T rear and a 16t sprocket, all to go on my XTR M980 setup.

I am concerned about my average speed on longer rides, where on all flat sections I used to go big blade and grind away, and on open downhill sections, where I could keep up with 29ers because of my gearing.  But I'm very excited to give it a try and see what my rig feels like in it's new guise.

did you go for the Praxis cassette, or the full cassette with ghetto conversion? Sure they would have been pretty much the same on both options...

I was very keen for the Praxis, but I have a new XTR 11/34 Casette, so with the 16 and the 40T extender it is very close to the Praxis and I already have the XTR casette. so don't have to buy another now.

May just sell the XTR casette before fitting it and buy an XT 11/34 - then my whole drivetrain will cost the same as the XTR Casette...
