That fire sounded bad, and the fire season has only just started.

Not too sure if there is much/any consideration for an alternate route other than the Ou Kaaps detour and the 50km M3 Dash.

As this will be my first CTCT, I was wondering wether you old hands can recommend a method of getting my bike down to Cape Town from Pretoria/Jhb?

I saw some shipping options on the CTCT website but prefer recommendations.

different means of bike-transport has its own pros & cons

the most hassle-free method to bring a bike to the race is using those listed transport-companies; The only cons for this method is that, you'll need to collect the bike the day before the race (& one will missed those breakfast pre-race ride up Suikerbossie)

Flying down with the bike is another option (which many uses). It's a cheaper option than the "transport-company" option, but one will carry the bike throughout the trip, packaging the bike between the trips can be a time-consuming exercise & there's always a risk of the airport porters "accidentally damage" the bike & even lost the luggage itself...

Then there's the last option is to drive yourself to CPT, no need to explain on this one...

I flew with Kulula last year. Dropped bike off @ Lanseria on the Monday/Tuesday before the race.  Collected in CT on the Wednesday afternoon,  Was still able to ride in CT for the few days before the race.

A mate of mine was traveling down to CT the weekend before the race, and he was allowed to take it on the plane with him.

Same system on the way back.

No issues at all, and the bike was OK when it got back to JHB.

Also the cheapest of the options.

I spent the whole of the school holidays commuting to and from work on the bike. High intensity intervals from traffic light to traffic light. Strength training into the teeth of the Southeaster. Recovery rides downwind after work. Even some serious heat training.

All this while the 2 teenagers that form half of Team DJR slept late and played couch potato. Come Argus day I plan to kick their skinny buts properly.....well, I recon I have a better than fair chance of doing it one more time.

That's good to hear, For me it was the other way around, wife had our baby late November and despite my best efforts at base miles in December it was pretty much non existent. So when I did get back into it my toppie who is now almost 60 and had been training his backside off was putting me in the hurt. Luckily for CTCT we on the tandem so he will be my turbo.

The 4th member of Team DJR is my dad, and he turns 78 this year. Every time I managed to get a 60km ride in between all the work, he phones me and tells me what a lovely 70km ride he just did. He's slow, but strong as a bulldozer!

How do they do the seeding for tandems?

Seeding of the weakest individual rider determines starting time. Unless you qualify for racing tandems group, then you start with them. Social tandem groups were abolished, so most tandems ride with single bikes. Lots of unhappiness about that from the regular tandem slowcoaches.
