and be patient (I know, it's almost impossible)

Took me almost a year to get all the parts because of budget constraints.

It was worth EVERY SECOND OF THE WAIT.

It's a pleasure.

Start it out with what you have. The SS ethos is "Run what you brung"

ie just build it and ride it. Sweat the details later and then start the pimping.

The are many 'boutique' built SS's standing unused or on sale, that should tell you something ..... it's not for everyone, as most have said build something with what you have and can scrounge together and go ride!

If you do enjoy it then the fun really begins!

This is true. Its not for everyone, but when you find out its for you, then go wild......

although... try and get it done a wee bit quicker than 25 years....

You have to get the frame stolen twice and recovered twice in that time too.... :)

Oh - and a fair bit of welding done....

My SS is a mish-mash of all sorts of things. Old Look KG 131 frame, some 80s steel fork, mavic ma40 wheels..

Its a real piece of **** and I love it.

Ahh: realised this is about MTB sorry! DISREGARD.

I can only Echo my brothers words here... Ive been through a good couple of geared bikes while I have owned my SS... and the SS is the only one I have at the moment!

Your first SS should be made up of bits and pieces you have lying around and can get your hands on. From your second SS onwards the world is your oyster - but your first will remain special...
