got just over 2200 on my xx1 and just starting show wear recently, makes me wonder tho because i thought shimano would go longer?

I'll be over the moon if I could clock 2k on a chain!

You'll be surprised. Take a chain thats done 3000+ km vs a new chain of the same model and across its length there will be a visual difference in length.

Yes, Agreed. Instead of 0.1 mm tolerance between pin and bush, it is now 0.5 mm. Multiply by 30 chain links and you have 15 mm

Interesting that your chains are wearing so quick.

I have 2 MTBs, one is running Shimano 2x10 SLX/Deore Drive train, first chain (KMC) lasted for about 2000km (with which I was impressed), it was replaced with an SRAM (because I could not find a KMC when it was worn out).

My Other bike is a cheap 3x8, and those chains lasted about 1500km, but recently (since changing to a single 34t chain ring at the front) they do not seem to last too long (got about 200km out of my last cheap Shimano chain). I have also been playing with the chain line a bit and I think I've made it worse...

Out of interest, what is your chainline? I would assume that the XT 11x1 would have a good chainline, but suspect that a "right-in-the-middle" of the cassette chainline should be the least amount of wear (since the strong riders can actually apply a lot of power regardless of the gear).

My 2x10 also lasted forever (2000-2500) and with CWC's XT 10spd chain specials, I never felt remorse :)

My chain line is center

I wonder if terrain, ito flattish vs very hilly with regular short steep power climbs will influence chain life, seeing that you run less gears, you place more force on the chain than for e.g. spinning up a steep hill with a 24/36 ratio...Im also running 34 upfront with 11-42,..only speculating, not sure if theres any truth in that, but logic tells me its possible..

What is your area like?

Flattish and been in good weather. Hasn't been much rain in Joburg lately. Don't use much of the 37 or 42 tooth to be honest. I'm heavy at 102kg so this won't help chain life. Used White Lighting Epic on the chain from day one.

I changed to XT 11speed about two months ago, and done about 1000km.

My second XT chain within this time is just about shot?? 500kms on a chain, is this normal?

I've never had to change my 2x10 chain this often

Riding conditions are normal, no mud, local Tygerberg MTB trails, regular proper cleaning and lubing..

Are there 11speed chains that perform better ito durability?

At R450-R550 a chain, R6000 a year gets a bit rough! >_<

You will probably get a multitude of answers that all depend on when the user defines his chain as 'shot'.

First comment in this context: If your chain checker is one of these small 10pin gages then rather don't use it. Measuring a chain over 10pins is just not accurate enough. You will get too much variance in your results due to uneven wear and tolerances. Better mark the specification length of your new chain on a wall, measured down from a nail in the wall. Then mark where 0.3% , 0.5% and 0.7% elongation are at the bottom of the chain. Now hang it up every 500ks and check where you are. Choose when to replace your chain. 0.3% will make your drivetrain last 'forever', 0.5% will still last but make the shifting feel less crisp over time. I usually get 1000km on a 10x XT chain before I get to 0.3% but I also look after it similar to you.

The 11x should wear proportionally faster since they are thinner bit it should not be more than 10% faster...

And sure, it will make a difference whether to pedal 300watts or 150watts. I guess it is quite linear....

Great info and thx for sharing Sebastian. Your method makes a whole lot of sense!

Clearly we ride in different conditions, and I don't have your okes brutal strength,

But I would be seriously peeved if I thought 1000km was normal, I used a Niner for my commute getting only 1000km commuting would really start working out expensive, SRAM was always the ONLY option

I see the Op says he does the correct maintenance I'm just saying no matter the conditions you riding in proper cleaning and riding with a small bottle of top up lube goes a loooong way, whenever you hear your chain screaming out in pain, forget about strava get off your ride lube your chain and continue, I consider myself someone who really takes care of his bikes but there is no way I ever got less then 2000km out of my chains

Clean,lube,repeat

a Bit of an update on my Chain-a-Month woes....

I decided to try the KMC Chain, as per photo attached, and whala! my horror story had a happy ending

Measured this morning, after 500km (XT 11spd chain shot by this time...twice), and not even a sign of wear shown yet

At R350 a chain from CWC,...I bought another two as spares!

I only sell KMC chains. Cheap, cheerful and hard as nails.

sjo, I think you got a factory faulty batch of chains to get 500km...

If I got 500km on a chain, I would stop riding!

Anything under 2500km on a chain/casette combo, I feel short changed.  I'm on XTR chain, casette and crankset and they've really served me well.

When I ride mud and rain often I get around 2500km at 0.75% wear (measured on my Parktool chaintool), and in dry season, around 3000km at 0.75% wear on my chain casette and I change them together.

I reckon that if they wear together, I will have crisp shifting for the full duration of their life. This assumption is based on previously changing the chain on 1500km, fitting a new chain on a midlife casette gave me crappy shifting, so I refit the old chain and rode it to its wear limit.

And around 5700km for biggest chainring, 6000 for middle chainring and small chainring will last forever (still on triple yes).

I found that the higher ranking chains wear way faster than the lower ones.

Also used XT on my 1x10 setup and it wore out fairly quickly. Decided to put on a Deore chain and it still lasts and it weighed a little bit less than the XT as well

I use a Birzman chain checker. Im a fair weather rider, and wont go play in the mud,...learned my lesson long ago. My cassette, chain and chainring gets scrub with Prepsol after every 3rd ride (Im pedantic). I wont lube over old lube and after the chain is thoroughly cleaned, I'll apply more than enough lube, work it into the chain with my hand, wipe the excess and let it stand overnight.

Its a passion, so its proper :)

I'll be trying different brands, cos I think thats where the problem lies...Also heard good things about KMC chains

So you are lubng after every 3rd ride?

Do yourself a favour and lube before EVERY ride - even if it's over old lube - you will double or more the life of the chain.

It's also possible you are not completely removing the prepsol after cleaning the chain (stuff is a nightmare for oil integrity) and/or not lubing enough on the clean chain - you have to get lube between the plates and under the rollers - this takes a bit of doing initially with a completly dry chain.
