And Dstv shifts the rerun earlier tonight... Thanks, peasants. At least I saw Chris doing his thing and wandering gently up to Richie P. Hope Dan M gets a win somehow. Only him and Richie had any gumption in that last bit, until Adam Yates also rode away. But I still can't get upset about Nairo - he just has not had it the whole tour. Sky is just too strong.

I also see Peter is disrespecting the leaders by unicycling over the line, while the leaders could barely close their shirts through the effort. Bad form.

Just kidding, Gen... ???? #wheeliewheeliespecial

Saddest part of this years tour for me is Richie Porte pucturing and losing all that time. Could have been so different.

Yup. Thought exactly the same. He deserves some luck, And he seems like a lekker guy, too. For an Aussie, I mean

If I remember correctly he said minimum 10.  But we also had bad luck among others the little cliffhanger guy (his name fails me now but we mentioned the other day.  The oak who went over the edge after climbing like mountain goat).

That's the guy, he has had an interesting time in the professional ranks. He wound up on Team Sky coming across from Barloworld before injury curtailed his career. Also had a slight short-lived resurrection of it but I can't remember for which team.

Edit: Not sure if he would've turned out to be a GC contender but I suppose it's an interesting point to consider.

Also got caught out, I started watching and there was only a few km to go :(

Still it was awesome watching the majority of the leading group drop Quintana!

Tough guy of the day... so many stories in Le Tour away from the GC.

"Bora-Argon 18’s Shane Archbold suffered a high speed crash while descending on stage 17 of the Tour de France, so hard it snapped his bike frame in two, but he still managed to ride 70 kilometres to the day’s summit finish."

"I’ve never seen somebody go through so much pain – he’s so hard it’s unbelievable,” said his team-mate Sam Bennett, who rode with him to the finish."

How Sky’s brutal climbing tactics work, http://velonews.competitor.com/2016/07/tour-de-france/how-skys-brutal-climbing-tactics-work_415421

“I would not like to race against our team,” Poels told VeloNews. “The team is riding really well. You saw today we have all the guys there to help Chris.”

“You do a pace, so if they attack, you can still react also,” Poels said. “You put it high enough so that they others are on their limit, and make it difficult for them to attack, but you also save just a little bit.”

So how do they do it? Poels explained they set a rhythm just below their threshold, leaving a bit in the tank to grind down any would-be aggressors. Poels will often be the one chasing down the attacks, like when Quintana went early on Mont Ventoux. He can cover one or two hard accelerations, and then it’s game over.

At Lampre nobody wants to help him. You rarely see a Lampre rider with him. Which makes his performance so much more to talk about, seeing in which company he finds himself on the GC train.

Kristijan Durasek (Cro) Lampre-Merida was 4th on the stage today ahead of LM. Apart from LM & (the worlds worst signing after Farrar or Matt Goss) Costa I can't name another Lampre team member and sure as hell can't remember any moves they've been in so far.

Setting a pace just below their own threshold certainly seems to be working. Plus, as with the  Postal/Discovery team years before them, they are dedicated to one man exclusively.

Sky do show dedication unlike some other teams who are split, even when Froome was support for Wiggins in 2012 TDF this showed.

The wives were doing the splitting and handling all the in-fighting ;)
