Science says massage may not be worth the expense

An interesting read.

But surely if the pros do it.....

Would love to hear the view of some of the local medical buffs like Dr Swart.

To quote:

“All we have now is clinicians giving us their own personal impressions as opposed to any systematic study,” says Dr. Peter Tiidus, dean of applied health sciences at Canada’s Brock University.

Tiidus’ work on muscle damage and repair has included research into massage. In one controlled 12-week study, his team tested the effects of weekly massage on female recreational runners training for a 10-kilometer race, measuring claimed benefits like improved performance and perceived pain.

“Much to our surprise and disappointment, we saw absolutely no difference,” Tiidus says. “They reported the same amount of soreness, the same amount of pain, the same amount of beneficial effects of training adaptations.”

Did they also measure the psychological effect?

So mechanical manipulation of muscle tissue has no effect......mmmmm......what about all the other similar methods?

Academics are incentivised to publish papers. These papers don't have to be right, they just have to be published. More papers published = more funding

There's a lot of dodgy science as a result

The placebo effect definitely works, all those tired legs each year climbing suikerbossie after a lovely first year physio lass has rubbed them for 30 seconds at the bottom of the hill just proves that.

Seriously though, I would love to know if there are other studies to prove the actual benefits of massage

Whatever...i don't believe a massage will make a big improvement in performance, however if you have issues i.e. tight / knotted muscle somewhere then yes it can help to make the issues feel better.

A good massage is still lekka relaxing and feel good therapy

"Tested on a group training for a recreational 10km run"

Rather test it in a Tour de France team - one team massages and ices, the other does not at all. See what happens over 3 weeks.

Or stop test rugby teams massaging and icing after consecutive games in the World Cup and see what happens.

Makes me think of my doctor's comment when I went to physio for an achilles tendon injury ... 'if you have physio it'll take 4 weeks or more to heal, if you don't it will take a month or more .... but you'll feel better about it'

Massage isn't going to do squat for a major injury. It will aid in maintaining flexibility and help reduce scar tissue formation and this most doctors acknowledge. It's not allowing faster healing just assisting the process.

For more rapid healing you need more oxygen
