Does riding an 11-32T cassette on a Road bike make me any less of a rider?

The first time I did the DC a few years ago as a fairly noob cyclist I had a veteran team mate take the absolute p!ss out of my 30t which he referred to as a 'satellite dish'.

Needless to say I was less than sympathetic when I passed him on 170 kms after he had bonked.

Dont worry about what everyone else says... they will envy you at some stage during a long climb. I ride with compact crank and 11-32 (My bike came standard like that) and going up long tom pass during the jock i was smiling while everyone else was struggling to keep going.

I dont often use the 32 but when i need it for whatever reason i am glad i have it...

After popping on Hekpoort, right at the top, during the Satellite, I'm going to a 11-28 on the back. Would rather get a compact crank if I feel a need for a stronger ratio.

CRC has some decent prices on these bits at the moment. Going to put my order in today.

Also have a standard crank with 11-32, as others have said, don't often use the 32 but is nice to have!!

Used it plenty on the Panorama Tour this year :)

If it works for you then it's a-okay, you're the one pushing the pedals so only worry about what you think. You've still got the 11 for the flats and a big ring at the front so nothing's changed there, it's just easier on the steep stuff. Sounds ideal!

HI Guys

My area sees me needing to climb some steep hills. Does riding an 11-32 make me any less of a rider? Some say just get out the saddle and ride, i decided to do the same but with some assistance of the larger gears... Whats your views ?

Regards

Doesn't matter - you still kick all the couch pottatoes asses...

On some stages of the Giro, even the best climbers in the world used 32t bikes, some guys swapped bikes before climbs just to get new gear ratios for the hilly parts....

So if anybody wants to call a person a "less-of-a-rider", for using a 32t they can start so with those pros! Do what makes your riding FUN!

Grinding big rings just to show that you are macho is very stupid, just like most macho things are... (wear sleeves , always)

Sitting and maintaining a high cadence is much more energy efficient than standing. So chose a gearing that will allow you to stay seated with a high cadence on the steepest hills you are going to do.

To uae 32T u need to change ur pully(?) to a long one if u have a normally one now.

If u have a standard crank set, rather change that to compact and use 12-28. Bec if u use 32T this means that ur gear ratio is bad on the flat road.

HI DJpak

I managed to use the 11-32 with a 52/36 crank using a short cage RD(Ultegra 68XX) . However you cant cross chain 32 and 52 it will lock up but one should never ride that cross.

Before compact cranks there were triples.

And everyone pulled the piss out of me for my triple .

Until I left them behind on Suikerbossie one Argus when I spun my way to the top.

And then there was the Jock and also the old Race for Victory through Suikerbosrand. That little ascent claimed many victims with their 21-11 straight gears.

So if you are racing and for some reason need the gearing its better to have it than find out you need it. It wont win you races but it will stop you walking.

Years ago, shortly after buying my 1st road bike, I went back to the shop to ask for different gears because it was just too hard to get up the hills (came from a mtb background) and was told to be a man and get stronger (basically htfu). Took the advice but I still see every ad for compact cranksets and big cassettes in the Classifieds!

I cross chain my 52 / 28... don't ask me why but it is just the right gear a lot of the time to  climb around CT. I know there probably is an equivalent ratio that does the same thing but big ringing on chappies, BH and 'bossie with the 28 on the back is just 'right'.

Is cross chaining really even a factor like it used to be back in the day? You'd think shimano et al would tackle that as well as adding a extra cog every few years.
