Event Name: Fairtree Capital Simonsberg Contour MTB Stage Race
When: 6 February 2016 - 7 February 2016
Where: Delvera Farm, R44, Stellenbosch, Western Cape
Category: MTB

Fairtree Capital has confirmed that it will become the title sponsor of the inaugural Simonsberg Contour, a brand new 2 day mountain bike stage race in Stellenbosch, set to take place on 6 & 7 February 2016. The ‘Contour’ has been created to continue the development of, and expose, the incredible network of singletrack trails on the Simonsberg mountain. With more than 20km of mountain singletrack connecting more than 10 wine estates, the region is set to become a hotspot for mountain bike trail riders.

In terms of routing, a major trail build is underway. The Simonsberg is known for its general steepness, so it is quite fitting that the Contour’s name addresses this challenge. Dirtopia’s trail building activities has already unlocked many farms with more accessible contour trails, making it possible for riders to enjoy the stunning vistas that the region offers.

While the final route will be launched later this year, riders can expect daily stages of 55-60km, each with around 1500m of elevation. Race director Meurant Botha says that the emphasis will be on a fun, trail experience, a perfect season opener for the stage race season.

Further, the event is run in partnership with the Simonsberg Conservancy, representing 24 farms around the Simonsberg mountain, including a host of Stellenbosch’s premier wine estates. In terms of the deal, the Conservancy receives an annual financial contribution to beef up administration as well as becoming a shareholder in the event.

I'm tempted to enter.

Limiting entrance to 500 is a smart idea- the CTCT MTB event that uses some of these trails is not worth entering because of too much congestion.

This should be 2 nice days of good ST and great views.

In one of his tweets, Meurant said he's looking at options for the Fairtree.

I think they need all the support, this can't have been easy. What is really sad is that a few days before the fire he was showing pictures of his 28 strong crew carving their way up the mountain.. Hell, I'd even be prepared to ride around a parking lot to show my solidarity if that was the only option after this fire.. It must be so absolutely *** for them!

I've offered my support wherever he needs it. He's been there for us (Tokai), there's absolutely no doubt we'll do the same for him.

Awesome event! Well organised.

Water points had ice cold drinks and food no matter if you were in front or a back marker. Well marked and the food etc at the finish was fantastic all in all an awesome experience.

Long route is definitely not for the faint hearted. Was a little sick this weekend but decided to ride in any case and boy did I pay the school fees for that.

Kudos to Meurant and his team. This was definitely one for the books.
