Wider 29 inch tyres

Hey all.

I recently got me some of those wide lightnings for my tallboy, and have been running the specialized butcher up front, prurgatory at the back (will change this, rolling resistance is quite harsh)

But, my dilemma is spec only goes to 2,3 inch in the 29er.

I am looking for something a bit wider, 2,4 -2,5.

Any advice as to which brand goes this wide in 29, i know schwalbe goes to 2,35, and apparently is as wide as a 2,4??????

And as to which store sells these at the best deals?

Thanks for the advice in advance

Conti X-king has a 2.4 and I just put a Rubena Kratos 2.4 on the front. Don't know if these tires will suit your type of riding?

Interestingly, the overall diameter of the wheel has increased by about 1-1.5cm compared to the diameter with a Schwalbe Racing Ralph on the same rim...

Why not consider something like the WTB Breakout, which is available in 2.5". Mounted on a Wide Lightning, the tyre will probably be monstrous.

Also have a look at Continental's range of tyres, most of which are available in 2.4", as Conti's also have pretty high volume and width.

As Odinson above mentioned, WTB just brought out a 2,5, but suggests running on a wide rim.

I'm interested to know why you would worry about rolling resistance when considering wide tyres? Bigger contact patch = more resistance, More Resistance equals better grip when the going gets fun.

I was using a set of Veemax 2.3's on wider rims , which were great but rolling resistance was stratospheric as it is a soft and sticky tire so I decided to go back to normal Schwalbe Racing Ralph combo on the rims as I was so much slower.

They are pretty sticky, but dont try and ride them uphill or long distances.

Also pretty cheap.

Just something to think about.

I am currently running 2.35 Hans Dampfh on a Cannondale Trigger. these tires work great, however roling resistance is rof, but that is why we cycle to get exercise and have fun, and the HD's do that well.

the only thing to look out for is tire clearance, now the HD's clear the frame with about 5mm's but I have noticed that they do catch the frame on occasion, I can see the scuff marks, and I assume this is due to enthusiastic cornering, one must also take into consideration that I weigh 110kg's plus, and I try and ride my bike like I stole it. Oh I am running flow ex rims.

Schwalbe casings seem to be wider than all the others, or at least appear to be. Hans Dampf is far better on a wide rim than on a narrow (25mm) one, but if I were you I'd go NEW Nobby Nic.

Apparently FANTASTIC.

Mine (2.35) hopefully arrives today, will test it out at Hakahana this week-end on the Wide Lightnings.

I wanted to go for the Onza Ibex 2.25, but got the new NN 2.35 for R150 less.

What about the 2.4 Ibex?

2.4 Conit's are very narrow compared to Schwable and Maxxis.

only the rear, the back end feels sluggish with the purgarory

What type of riding.

Problem is most of the nice wide casing tires is intended for Enduro and Downhill.

So you end up with nobbies like the Drakensberg and it weighs >1kg.

I want big volume with low rolling resistance  for my rigid SS

My Hans Dampf is killing me on the XC course.

On the Web I have seen a 2.4 Maxxis Ikon which I think will roll good and have acceptable weight.

But I have been able to get them in SA.

Maybe try this. (Looks like it will roll good)
