Ariane has been unstoppable the past few years, winning everything she entered. She has been struggling a bit recently and I wonder if it is not due to emotional reasons.

I agree. Wondering whether something is not a bit "off". Great athlete so I know she will bounce back.

Live coverage... ah yes! its the same covering a race live in the mountains in Tulbagh with the field spread. 12 minutes between 1 and 10 is very difficult to cover with a mobile camera. Road races at least have full road closure and bikes can track backward and forward to cover the 1 or 2 breaks from the peloton. So now we have to deal with recorded footage for the evening package that only rolls in after the ladies come in this afternoon. I promise you that they are editing at full tilt with what they have already to have it all available for the inserts of advertisements (to pay for the airtime), voice overs etc. by 7pm tonight. Think of it as at least 3 races that needs to be filmed and edited simultaniously (men, ladies and mixed) with a few sub-plots that also need some coverage (masters, grand masters, development, african jersey, development jersey). The production team at Supersport then have to get the voice-overs in, tweak the final production and get it all out by 10am so that everything can be loaded into the broadcasting feed by 22:30.

A grand tour is much simpler. Your producer switches to the live action with perhaps pre-recorded inserts of action at another point (say they cover the break and there is a crash in the main peloton, they cut to a recorded version). The footage is therefor mostly in chronological order by the time they need to edit the highlights package and the main action bits would have been flagged as well, so the job is then to eliminate unwanted flags until you have your 30 minutes highlights package.

I am by no means proficient in production and editing of these events, but its clear that covering a rugby game is much cheaper and simpler.

ja, but..

I haven't watched this years highlights yet, but if you want to call it the Tour de France of MTB, then I expect it to be the lead innovator in on the fly coverage of these events. Maybe we're just a bit too fussy. I want to see them innovating with drones, mobile ebike camera dudes, action cam footage on each elite team etc. etc. drones might be a bit hard with our current legislation, granted.

The thing is, you can see that a vast majority of the 30minute highlight package is prerecorded. They just slot about 4 or five 3minute segments into the final edit.

I expect more, i think we all do - mainly because we hold the standards of the event so damn highly. For instance here is the daily highlights footage that TeamRSAweb did for their riders/supporters that was for online promotion. banged it out each afternoon

and ja, this is 2010, six years ago so much has improved since, really.

We have the best riders and the best race in the world on our doorstep and all I see are:

competitions

message rider options

celebrity interviews

poor pictures

poor videos

Cmon Epic, stop the self congratulations, the Discovery Sports Awards medals, endless repetitive media releases

You have a brilliant race - focus on that - if I wanted an event I would go to the J&B Met

Day 1 and I am highly irritated.

Still a believer - wanting to, but losing faith in the race

Isn't this so typically South African?

DHL Stormers

Toyota Cheetahs

Sahara Park

Growthpoint Kings Park

Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour

Why the hell do we have to prepend every thing/place with a sponsor's name?

Advertising in other countries are certainly more palatable.

Irritating... :cursing:

Biggest issue is coverage and connectivity, as well as how do you get the cameras where they need to be and then how many helicopters would you need to bounce the signal off.

At the TdF you have paved roads so it is easy to have a camera with some for of wireless connectivity to the editing room.

The off road at the Epic is serious.

Re the drones, how many will you need, typically max 30 mins flight time (and then you are talking big bucks) and Max 2 km line of sight range.

Here's a plan - POV & bike cameras uploading to tethered balloon relay stations, no brainer really what with all the tech going that is widely & cheaply available, they should get in contact with me next time.

That 2010 Stage 2 review, sigh, glory years, Burry was still with us. RIP. Bart is the dude who co-comments with Rob-ou on the UCI Redbull Media UCI WC show stream, He said he might be doing it this year with Yo!anda;s dad, but i don see them on the list. Bit of a dearth of XC top dawgs it seems this time, I think they generally focus of their training for WC events doing something like the Epic distracts them?  Once burnt, twice shy?

In my opinion the Epic has become over-commercialised, brands, corporates, celebs in ur face, but that's much like the rest of SA, where there is a buck to be made it will be.
