Social media is not social, it is antisocial. It makes people see others very one-dimensionally, it is all about ego and showing off and who shouts loudest. Best solution? Delete facebook, twitter, instagram and don't look back. I realised some time ago that you could do almost anything other than being on Facebook and it would be better for you.

All good points. Might mark me as a dinosaur but I never bought into any of those. I am still holding out against Whatsapp as I do not want the family spam bonging me awake at weird hours of the day from far-flung distant relatives.

The hub is about as social media-ey as I get- although some of those traits you mentioned still apply here.

A big discussion on one of talk radio stations here in NZ is whether Facebook Live even needs to exist.

Most other forms of mass live broadcasting are held to strict rules and regulations. So why should FB be any different, where any fool with a smart phone can broadcast whatever they want to the world without being subject to a broadcasting commission.

Having that sort of personal, *un-moderated sop-box to stand on is a disaster waiting to happen... or as we have seen, a disaster that has happened. (I say un-moderated, as there is no pre-screening of content. Only reactive moderation once inappropriate material has been uploaded).

Would it kill those streamers out there to have a 5min delay to their content? A 5min delay for content to pass through some sort of AI and algorithmic moderation before going out to the masses.

Such a 5min delay could have arguably alerted police quicker and saved dozens of lives last Friday.

I myself personally don't see a need for personal live broadcasting platforms like FB live.

.............. is whether Facebook Live even needs to exist...............

Interesting! Whether it is necessary or not is questionable, but what is certain is that there are already enough people out there hooked on it to make it impossible to eradicate. Much like drugs and drug addicts. While there is a demand for it there will be a supplier, be it legitimate and out in the open (alcohol) or illegal and uncontrollable (cocaine). Interesting!

Very true points!

Using the drug trade as an analogy, I guess it comes down to whether we allow cocaine in our Coca Cola (think 1900's), and therefore on mass distribution (Facebook = supermarket, corner cafe, etc all-in-one)...

or does the distributor cut it from their product line. Yes those who want cocaine can still get it, but not on the supermarket shelf. People wanting live streaming abilities then have to go to their " dealer" (underground platforms) where audience bases are smaller and they lose that power.

Agreed that if the big-shots (Facebook, Google, etc) change live streaming to 5min delayed and moderated streaming, it won't kill the concept completely. People will find other ways to live stream. They just won't do it on a mass scale.

And I may be naive (as I don't stream anything), but I think most people are inherently good and will come to accept a 5min moderated delay because their content is innocent, whilst those who want un-moderated live stream ability, may be up to no good, they may not... but at least that huge platform has been removed from them.

Anyway, just my 2c worth... as a person who has not posted on Facebook in about 3yrs, and has a grand total of 2 Instagram posts

The thing with social media, it is so addictive people will do almost anything in pursuit of meaningless 'likes' and 'shares'. They will ruin their relationships. They will behave like assshholes. They will ignore their children. But by golly, they will be on Instagram and Facebook and Twitter; evbery picture taken is designed to make someone else envious, every post made designed to showcase rapier wit and devastating insight, every comment carefully crafted for maximum 'thumbs up'. It's all sad and pathetic.

And it doesn't matter what illegal, unethical or immoral things these social media providers do. People will not quit, because they can't. They'll immediately justify use with 'well, it helps keep in touch with people all over the world'. Yeh OK, mate: when you phone someone and have a chat about your weekend and they don't go 'Oh, yes, I already saw on Facebook', well, then your interaction will be so much richer. And also, you will only stay in touch with the people who really matter...and have meaningful interactions with them.

Thanks for this.

I have been struggling for some time with Facebook feeling like the centre of everything.

I just went and did a facebook cleanup of groups and "Friends"

The only reason that I did not deactivte completely was to record and store photos of the kiddos. I quite enjoy the memories feature that reminds us of some of our adventures. This adds positive value to my life and I will retain it. The rest is bull****.

Went from 800 people down to like 100. Cant even remember some of the people on there!

Relax Ross, I kept you.

I just deleted my FB account. It does give you the option of downloading your data (I assume this includes photo's and video's) before deletion.

I was also worried about losing memories but I'm really happy with Google Photo for that - automatically backs up everything from my phone, creates little videos and sends little 'On this day' reminders.

MUCH happier without FB!

I started that purge process probably 3 or 4 years ago. I literally got down to 0. Then realised I have google photos and onedrive storing my pictures. So I deleted the lot.

Gphotos and onedrive remind you of past pics all the time, so there's that.

I’m a huge fan on Instagram (although of late have removed a few “stars” who are using for pure advertising”. Because. The whole concept is to load a picture and to make it pretty, it is hard for people to be negative or try drive an agenda. Therefore you leave there feeling a little happier than when you got there.

People need to apply the same simple rule they should apply to all aspects of their lives. Does my interaction with this person/job/exercise/app or whatever make me feel better? If the answer is yes, then continue, if not, we’ll, move on.

I'm nio instagram expert, but what I have seen and experienced of it, people mostly post there to show off and some go to great lengths (such as hiring a grounded private jet) to show off the 'good live' they are supposedly living. Or photoshopping the living daylights out of images, be it selfies or otherwise...all to make others envious, or, as you say, to sell stuff.
