Bike wheels in the cabin?

Many years ago I took one wheel bag with me, they did not allow me to sit with a wheel at my seat. I had to check it at the door of the plane and got it back when I exited the plane. The wheel does not fit in the overhead luggage.

Also getting through the x-ray was a problem. One time they pushed it through the x-ray machine sideways, the other time they just searched the wheel and bag.

Nope you wont be allowed to take in on board with you. If you got connections with a crew member they would slip it on board for you and either put it in the cockpit or the cupboard where they put the business class suit jackets. But as a normal passenger you cant. Even if it where say a small BMX wheel they are deemed dangerous goods. They expect you to be able to hijack the plane with the spokes.

This sounds right, do not take a chance.

Rotiringer, I would suggest you wrap each wheel in a lot of newspaper and get two cardboard wheel boxes from a bike shop. Check them as luggage. They will be fine. These wheels are shipped from overseas via air mail like this and they arrive fine.

I have travelled often with track wheels, and there is never the same result, it depends on the airline, and the mood of the people on duty on the day. Often they will take them from you at the steps of the plane, and you will collect them again as you exit, sometimes they will store them for you on board.

Airline regulations say that fragile things like bike wheels must be packed in the bottom of the cargo hold under the pianos, that's why they are not allowed in the cabin!

Weird. I have travelled more than once with a guitar in a bag- they take it from you when you board and give it back when you get off. So why not wheels....?

I flew from china through Dubai and multiple internal chinese flights with wheels in hand on boarding. They take them from you and you get them when you disembark..

I took mine on a domestic flight a few years ago.

They put them behind the last row of seats in the plane and all was fine.

I suggest you phone the airline and ask them what their policy is.

Then get it in writing that you are allowed to take them on board.
