A big guy came soloing past our little group on his 29er with knobblies at Klapmuts on Sunday. Didn't see what group he was in, but at that moment I would have just doffed my cap and said 'Well done'. I averaged 34kph,so to be TT'ing along on your ace at that speed into the wind must have taken some doing.

A few okes on road bikes were far more dangerous in the group.

Think the point is that on their own, not an issue, As soon as they are in the group, clipping bars and touching brakes it becomes an issue.

A few okes on road bikes were far more dangerous in the group. - Imagine a few of those on MTB in your group   :whistling:

I don't own a road bike, but I'll continue doing as much road races on my 29er with lekker noisy knobblies as I want - don't really care if you feel it's dangerous or not. If I can keep up on my 29er DS weighing 14kg, then you're going to slow on your thin bike    :whistling:  :nuke:

PS: so far my count of road races are 2. or rather 1.5 as the 2nd argust was only a half-august.

i'd also like to ride the argust, or is that the august...?

Not unless an undercover roadie has won the epic before....

it is apparently a dirt roadie race .................... just stirring, don't hunt me down and flog me in the streets.

Personally I feel MTBs have no place in a road race ...or on the road for that matter (in a bunch). Besides the points others have mentioned above, wide bars, speed, etc. I think a far bigger risk is the fact that, I think, MTBers may not call out road hazards that they can just cruise over with their wide tires and suspension but that might be catastrophic if you hit them on 23mm tyres. I also find the sound of knoblies and the constant bobbing of guys us duel sus bike very distracting and annoying. Obviously if you're doing the 94.7 for sh1ts and giggles and starting at 10am with the rest of the fun riders knock yourself out but do you really have to boost your ego by doing it A bunch (even if you are fast enough). Just my 2c.

I have done a number of road events on my MTB, I ride with a bunch of stronger riders also on MTB and our annual task is to come in below the 3 hour mark at Amashova. We start in an official MTB batch that is right at the back, so generally are traveling much faster than the road cyclists around us, so I don't think we hinder them at all.

However, it has never occurred to me to warn anyone of any obstacles as you have mentioned, that's definitely something I will be mindful of in the future - we generally have a large bunch that holds onto us near the end.

If your road bike is so fast you should be faster than me on my MTB.

If you dont like hanging with MTB's on a road ride... ride away from us but dont dare sit on my wheel.

We all know you secretly want one, just ask Oompie to take you to the shop and get yourself a proper bike. It will be OK, promise.

Sounds like a blast! Kudos to you guys!

This topic has gone so far beyond the point of race safety concerns,

We are now only discussing how to prevent mtb'krs from whipping roadie azzie on their own turf..?

I've had a roadie push me into the gutter at a race..

The only problem was ... He followed me after pushing...

And he crashed on the way out... Behind me ..

Bummer...

So my advice... If you are a roadie, and cannot even drop a mtb'kr,

Please don't hind behind the dangers of mtbs in road races?

HTFU.... Stop whining... Pedal harder..pedal faster..

Who knows, you might just improve your seeding...?

And I stirrrr.....

So you're keen to start lap 3 eh?

Would you like:

1 - Rehashed argument

2 - Fresh drivel

or Escapee's favourite

3 - Submission by wordcount...?

Pick your flava!
