Hubby says he is getting me one for xmas for our rides. Something about improving the quality of his ride and being able to enjoy the peace and quiet of nature.

Best you quote Rule 5 at him.... tell him to #ridelikeagirl.... perhaps Amy McDougall is a good example.... :)

Amy is amazing! If I had half her mental chutzpah .......I'd moan a lot less on the hills

It doesn't improve oxygen levels, it does however make it harder for you to breathe, which in turn makes your lungs work harder making them stronger(which could help when not using the mask).

i'd bank on the fact that when breathing regularly, you don't only also run out of breath which in turn improves your lung capacity, but your legs also work harder as you are able to produce more watts while breathing regularly, improving leg strength.

so other than being a silly looking, hot, siff (imagine the cheek sweat in your mouth after a 3 hour ride) and particular uncomfortable piece of shyte, I'm pretty sure that it has a negative impact on the training of all of us non-pro's.  if you are so good that you need to train at altitude, you are under the assumption that your leg strength, lung function etc. is already developed to a superb degree...

Regarding my previous post; I didn't say that it simulates altitude training, not did I say it improves oxygen intake. I lbs owner has one, and that (my first post) is what he said he experienced.

Anyway...scientists still cant tell us what to eat (each with their own opinion), so how do we know that the "scientifically proven" evidence for the mask is true?

These people are going to get sued so bad for false advertising. I have warned them on several occasions to change the name. Its a load of rubbish. Go out and train and restrict your breathing, and see how you fair with performance. Training at 100% is very important. Thats why athletes live high and train low in a perfect scenario. Because the adaptation to altitude happens in your body when you LIVE at altitude. But you want to always train at 100%, ie, low altitude. This altitude. Ask has nothing to do with that. The name is misleading. Yes i know they claim it strengthens your respiratory muscles but then they have to change the name.

So wouldn't a better use of the mask be to wear it all the time, and only take it off when you ARE training?  This way you adapt to having less air, but get more when you need it during training.

This is a lot easier to test than effects of diet on multiple body types, which offers up too many variables and difficult controls. Stick on mask, train, test oxygen levels. No improvement? Oops, let's just hand it over to the marketing department then.
