New to Road Cycling - Any advice on getting better seeding?

I am new to road cycling after starting off with MTB only. I have quite a good MTB seeding but no road one. Any tips on getting into a better seeding without having to start right at the back of the up and coming Value Logistic Fast One race?

Nope, unfortunately your MTB seeding means nothing on the road (and vice versa). Just start from the bottom and work your way up, and have fun doing it.

With each race, if you're competent enough, you'll find yourself moving up the batches quickly enough.

You could try ask them at the number pickup (take your mtb seeding along). If they are in a good mood they might bump you up a few groups. Otherwise its just a case of paying your dues and earning the seeding in this race for the next one.

Don't forget your transponder at home. In the rush to get to the Argus startline, I have forgotten mine twice. After two sub 3:30 finishers, I started at 10:35 this past year :)

ride faster

My problem isn't necessarily riding faster its passing 100's/ 1000's of other guys taking a nice easy ride on their bikes.

If you push yourself at your normal pace you should quickly work your way up to the appropriate group, after riding a few races...

I don't think there should be shortcuts to getting a good seeding...

I'm new to the roadie thing too.

What about buying one of those CSA "racing licenses" - will that help seeding?

Yes it will. It will put you in an age specific racing bunch. In front of all the A, B, C batches etc. and if you are not fast enough to race with the guys will be dropped and then get passed by all the other batches.

Train more, race more and you will end up in a batch of similar ability. If that becomes a racing group then great. I would not suggest the race group if you are new to the sport.

To get into those elite or veteran batches you need to hold the racing licence as well as have a seeding index lower than 19.9. So I dont think it will automatically work. Holding a racing licence and then approaching the organizers to consider other circumstances, may however sway their minds.

I started cycling last year,  Most was  from the back as did not have PPA, The nice part is there often "new guys" that race like mad so you can slip behind them for a bit until they toast.

Also, often few fast guys at back that don't have PPA , so hook up and make fast group, Thats how I did well in my Tour de Stellenbosch, got seeding of I after that one from temp2

OK, thanks for the good advice.  I mtb a lot but getting into road.  Will race a bit first and see how it goes.

Thanks for that - where is the road seeding index?  Saseeding only for mtb.

Sorry if that's a dumb question.

Check the PPA website. They have your road and MTB seeding on there.

With regards to "instantly good seeding" because you have a good MTB seeding: Remember that riding in the higher road batches is night and day from MTB racing. You need to learn to ride in bunches of 100 odd riders at 60kph. If you don't have the required skills, you either be spat out or have a big crash.

It's not just about riding fast. It's also about riding good.
