Cracked Anthem

My question would be...do the carbon frames also crack or break???

if not then it is a no brainier...if you have an extra R 8k sitting in the piggy on the top shelf.

Something else to consider...would it increase the value of the bike and some by the amount you gona have to outlay.

My both 2014 frame and 2015 replacement frame cracked in the exact same place, I now don't leave my house without cable ties and duck tape.

After the 2015 frame cracked in November last year I considered upgrading to the carbon frame, the Giant rep told me that I would have to pay in R10 500.

I decided to stay with the aluminium frame because the 2016 frame as been reinforced in that spot and it has a stronger rear triangle...

I must say it is nice to get a new frame every year...

If I'm not mistaken, the 2016 Alu model is strengthened in that area after historic issues.

Also have a look at a 2016 Alu before making a decision.

2016 model also comes with thru axle on the back so something else also to consider when replacing the frame (2015 and older have QR).

Sorry to hear about your break and good luck!

That's true but not because they keep cracking. I'm a big anthem fan so when people mention the cracking issue I just keep quite.

BTW, how far out is your seat post? What mark is it on?

For a dual suspension bike I don't see the huge advantage of carbon. Given how big a roll the front and rear suspension play in ride quality the frame material contribution must be close to negligible in comparison.

Put that money in a savings account towards your next bike rather.

Thanks for the input. I think the Anthem Advanced full build might be 800g lighter than the alu version but frame only I'm told is about 400g difference.

Will have to see what options LBS can arrange. The 2016 alu frame looks very good though and has improvements. The seat and top tube weld area has been strengthened and it has thru axle rear.

I bought myself the aluminium 2016 Anthem X last week. What an awesome bike. A friend of mine has the carbon 2016 XT version of the same bike. The weight isn't even noticable switching between the two bikes. The lighter carbon wheels on his bike probably make a bigger difference than the carbon frame.

Compliance and stiffness benefits are also negligible. Any vertical compliance benefits are going to be hidden by the suspension and most of the side to side flex happens at the pivots.

This,to me, makes a LOT of sense!

I'll have to go check the exact mark but it has about 5 or 6cm before it reached the limit...

Thanks for the info, I'm also on about the same left in the frame then.

Agree with this, I can't justify R10 - 12K for the slightly lighter carbon frame. I'll be replacing with the 2016 alu frame, LBS says they are holding up well so far.

Rear thru axle is not an issue, you get an adapter with the frame so you do not have to buy a new wheel or hub...

Sheesh I don't know how you guys are snapping frames.... I am on my third Anthem and have never snapped a frame. I have owned two alloy Anthems and am now on the Adv carbon version. I ride my bikes quite hard and am not afraid to jump them etc.

I have also bought land all over KZN...

These bikes are incredible. The 2016 Adv model is gorgeous. In the flesh it is even prettier then in the pictures.

The weight of the rider has a significant impact

Are you like 58 kgs?

*grin*

Out of interest, what do you weigh?

I've already decided to get the alu replacement but interested to know if you experienced much of a difference between the 2.
